There has been much focus on the topic of gun control, for the past two decades in America. Events involving deranged shooters have put gun control in the spotlight. These events include; Sandy Hook, the shooting in Aurora, Colorado, Columbine, and the Virginia Tech shooting. Although the right to bear arms is our basic constitutional right under the second amendment, there are many people who contest this right. The government has made restrictions on firearms claiming it will reduce crime, yet they should not be able to have the power to make changes to our constitutional rights created by our forefathers. The government should recognize the safety Americans can provide for themselves with firearms.

They claim that guns kill people and cause violent crime to flourish. There is a famous quote that some use, contradicting this point stating that “guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” The banning of handguns or any other firearms could result in more crime according to some protesters. Citizens owning firearms would be a good in my opinion, especially in deranged gunman situations. If a shooter came into a room of unarmed citizens, the results could be catastrophic. In the amount of time it would take for an officer to get to the scene, everyone involved in the incident could be dead. In cases like the Aurora shooting, it was a good thing that James Holmes did not possess a fully automatic assault rifle. He brought in a semi automatic rifle with a 100 round clip. Although the gun reportedly malfunctioned after firing several rounds, his gun was a semi automatic, if he successfully fired all 100 rounds the death toll would have been dramatically higher. In this case, if Holmes had easy access to a fully automatic weapon to fire those hundred rounds, many more innocent Americans potentially, may have been slaughtered. Under further investigation by police, Holmes did not undergo any background checks while purchasing his weapons according to
