we can see based on the graph above that no matter how strict the gun laws may be crime will still be among us. Chicago is known for being one of the most dangerous places in America, even though it has the strictest of gun controls. New York is another city with strict gun controls and even still it has ridiculous murder rates. Dallas/Ft. Worth and Houston are voted some of the safest cities to live in and Texas is known for people owning guns. Another key example is the city of Detroit, known as a very dangerous city James Craig the police chief of Detroit has stated that people should start carrying guns in order to protect themselves and statistically speaking the crime rate has fallen immensely. “Just look at how effective those laws have been in inner-city Chicago, a city with the toughest gun laws in our nation, where 70 people were murdered last month alone and where over 3,400 American lives have been lost since this administration took office in 2009. You know why those laws fail? Because criminals by definition don’t follow laws” Gun laws have been a controversial topic for some time now and even now in our presidential race this is a major topic that’s relevancy has hit an all-time high especially with what is going on around the world …show more content…
Since 1939 French gun laws have been known as very tough. Since there is no right to bear arms for one to own a weapon must go through certain steps to actually be able to acquire one. Starting with the Charlie Hebdo attack we can see that the men who attacked the French newspaper had Kalashnikov rifles. Kalashnikov rifles are highly illegal and require an extensive background check to even attain. Now many have asked how they even attained those weapons but the truth revolves back to one of my first points in how the black market trade is very relevant and can be seen by how more and more weapons have been smuggled into France for criminals to illegally obtain. “Many firearms are trafficked [illegally] in Europe come from the western Balkans after being held illegally after recent attacks in the area.” The black market in France is enormous where “a Kalashnikov or a rocket launcher can be acquired for as little as 300 to 700 Euros [$325 to $750].” (3) Months later another mass shooting happened, France was already on high alert due to the past shootings but that did not stop a mere seven men from injuring over 400 citizens. It wasn’t until armed police were able to show up to actually stop the terrorists but by then it had been too late. The actions that have plagued France have made many people ask the question, do gun laws actually work? Could armed civilians had stopped these armed men?
