Gun control and crime rate have a very complex relationship. In the Bill of Rights, the Second amendment states that every man has a right to bear arms. Does gun control protect the Second Amendment? Is it possible that gun control saves lives? In today’s political society, the correlation between gun control and crime rate is a highly controversial topic. The question is: does gun control reduce crime rate or not?
A Harvard study was done to determine if banning firearms would reduce murder and suicide rates. The study stated the number of “intentional deaths” throughout continental Europe and compared them with United States to determine if gun control lessens crime and death rate. Even though it is easier to murder with a firearm rather than with a less dominant weapon, shrinking the number of guns can conclude in an increase or decrease of cruel crimes for different reasons. A country which does not have a law against gun ownership possibly can have a small number of stealing, assault, and killings due to the people protecting themselves with guns. Decreasing the numbers of guns may lessen the number of homicides although it causes the rate of non-firearm homicides to increase. The countries with gun control may seem like they have an advantage to being safer and having less violent crime but, robbery or assault can increase without individuals being able to utilize guns to defend themselves (Hartsfield, 2007).
