Guns don 't kill people, people kill people. It is just a normal school day; children laughing, teachers smiling, and the smell of the day 's lunch wafts down the hallways. Not one single child, teacher, or any other employee would have thought that today would be their last day on earth. America for Responsible Solutions’ advertisement about gun control uses persuasive appeal of ethos to create a personal connection with parents and teachers. There are more than forty million mothers with children under the age of eighteen and just over three million public school teachers, all of whom are targets for this advertisement. Looking at all of the visual information such as the pool of blood and faint view of bullet holes in the wall, a viewer can infer that they are looking at a school shooting. A few things come to mind when we think about school shootings, the loss of human life, the loss of young potential and tragedies of the past. Columbine high school is one of these tragedies. On the morning of April 20, 1999, students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed twelve students and one teacher, and wounded twenty three others, before they committed suicide. The shooting made international headlines causing for many to question the availability of firearms. There have been over one hundred school shootings since columbine in 1999, but in more recent years, the most infamous shooting was at Sandy Hook Elementary school in 2011. On the morning of December 14th, 2011, Adam Lanza fatally shot his mother, 20 children, and 6 teachers and employees before committing suicide. After this horrific event many called upon congress and the president to do something about what had happened. To pass gun control legislation and restrict what weapons people can own legally. The thought of someone with a sane mind going to a school and purposely shooting children is a gut-wrenching thought, but many people are not of sane mind. When you ban guns, you ban ways to protect yourself from others with guns, but couldn’t gun control prevent that issue from arising in the first place? It is a back and forth issue that had been discussed for years, but when events like school shootings happen many feel like gun control legislation is the necessary quick fix reaction to such events and groups like the ARS seek to abuse situations like school shootings in order to pass legislation.
