Gun Background Checks : A Serious Public Health Problem Essay

Gun background checks exist to insure that firearms will only end up in the hands of those who are responsible enough to own them. “Gun violence is a serious public health problem in our communities. Like the dangers of drunk driving or prescription drug abuse, no one single policy will stop every tragedy from occurring. But we can take clear steps to reduce the prevalence of gun tragedies.”(Sal). With the addition of new and improved gun background checks, gun related crime will go down, safety will go up and gun will only end up in responsible hands.
There are many ways that the addition of new and improved gun background checks will lower crime. “Research has shown that state universal background checks — along with other state laws designed to increase gun seller and purchaser accountability — significantly reduce the number of guns diverted to the illegal market, where the above high risk groups often get their guns”( Sargent). This statement proves that existing gun laws help reduce the chance that a gun would go to into the wrong hands. If the preexisting laws already help reduce this, the addition of more laws would prevent it even more. There are many ways that criminals are able to get guns such as the private seller loophole. The private seller loophole is a way that people or criminals are able to get guns without a background check.
