SAMPLE PREPARATION: Wilcox shale and Pottsville shale samples are tested with the indentation method in this experiment. Both samples are quartz rich and silty shales which contain about 45 to 50% of quartz, 40 to 45% of clays and about 5% of plagioclase. Wilcox shale sample is from Louisiana and formed in upper Cretaceous while Pottsville shale samples are from Alabama and formed in upper Pennsylvanian. These two type of shale rocks are chosen because they are “local” rocks which was abundant and available in the lab, also they have very similar mineralogical compositions.…

Studies show that patients who chew gum can remember 20-23 percent more cognitive information in their short term memory (Smith “Effects of chewing gum,” n.d). A study shows that patients who chewed gum also experienced a higher reaction time and more accurate results in a test. The test subjects also reported feeling more awake and focused than the subjects without gum. Being alert can also lead to faster reaction time and more focus. Although patients who chew gum recorded a worse score in the first five minutes of the test but overcame the others in the later portion of the test.…

Growing up, there was one product that I could not live without and this was chewing gum. I loved everything about it: the unwrapping of a new piece, the vibrant taste as you chew the fresh piece, and the challenge of stuffing the most amount of gum you could in your mouth to make the biggest bubble ever. This simple and ideal tradition is banned from most schools. If schools want students to feel comfortable, schools need to rethink their restriction. To begin, BBC News states that gum chewing increases brain function by making the heart beat faster, causing blood and nutrients to rush to the brain.…

Following World War 2, analysts discovered how to make an artificial (synthetic) gum base to replace the natural one. Moreover, the new and improved gum base was basically rubber that releases flavor into one’s mouth while they are chewing it. Synthetic gum bases are made from artificial polymers, a strand of molecules that encompass hydrogen and carbon, meanwhile since the polymers are not natural, the gum base has better aspect and is more pure. Information on synthetic gum base is not released by gum companies, yet we have learned that not only is the base made up of polymers, but also waxes, fats, elastomers, and emulsifiers.…

When asked to agree or disagree with the primary statement of this clinical study, “Kids tend to get hyperactive after they’ve eaten lots of sugar,” I could not help but whole heartedly agree. As a summer-long camp counselor, an older sister to two, an early childhood education major, and as a former kid, I can honestly say that sugar does and (still can for me) induce a sense of hyperactivity. Sugar causes a rapid rise in blood sugar, therefore causing an intense increase in activity levels. This is why we know that campers 1 cupcake, they are bouncing off the walls. To investigate the effects of sugar on children, I have chosen to conduct a clinical study to determine this.…
