Gum Synthesis Lab Report

Improved Essays
Purpose- By completing this lab I had hoped to accomplish finding out which gum brand gives you the best flavor. I was testing the price of gum compared to how long the flavor lasted, I thought that the more expensive the gum was the longer the flavor would last because when you buy a more expensive product it tends to be better quality as with shirts, so I thought the same would go for gum flavor.

Hypothesis- I think that if the gum is more expensive than its flavor will last the longest because it should be better quality gum.
Independent Variable — Gum Brand (1 stick of each)
Dependent Variable — How long the flavor lasts (Minutes)
Controlled Group — Flavor, size, weight and the person chewing will all be the same. We will know when a change has happened because only the gum brand will be changeable.

Procedure-
Materials:
1 Pack of Wrigley’s spearmint gum ($.94)
1 Pack of Extra spearmint gum ($.96)
1 Pack of 5

If needed cut each stick so that they are the same weight.
Take the Wrigley gum out first, everyone should put the gum in their mouth at the same time that the timer is started.
When the flavor runs out hit the stop button and record your time.
When everyone is done take the average of the trial.
Repeat for each pack of gum.

Conclusion-
My hypothesis, if the gum is more expensive than the flavor will last longer because the gum is better quality, was supported by how the average length of time a flavor stayed was longer for the most expensive gum and for the least expensive gum was very short. The most expensive gum (5) flavor lasted for an average of 1,439.5 seconds, whereas the cheapest gum (Wrigley’s) flavor only lasted for an average of 213.3 seconds. This supports my hypothesis because it shows that the more money we payed for a

In this unit of my 9th grade Physical Science, we are learning and experiencing with labs. In this week's experiment, my class did the paper towel lab. Here, we tested the quality of three different paper towel brands, Viva, Up&Up, and Bounty. Each lab group was testing for a certain quality of each brand, such as strength and absorbency. Through different experiments, each lab group came to the conclusion that one paper towel brand had more strength or better absorbency than the other two.…

The purpose of this experiment was to identify what the effect type of fruit had on the consistency of Jell-O. The Jell-O with apple slices in it had the hardest consistency, and the pennies dropped into the Jell-O/apple mixture dropped an average of .07 inches into the container. The pennies in the mango and Jell-O mixture dropped in an average of 1.1875 inches in, and the pennies dropped an average of 1.4875 inches into the pineapple and Jell-O mixture, meaning the apples and Jell-O solution’s pennies sunk in the least. The penny was not able to break through the surface as much because the solution had a tougher consistency than the pineapple Jell-O solution and the mango Jell-O solution. All of the data shown in table 1 and graph 1 supported…

The experiment that I will be conducting focuses on how fast one tablet of Alka seltzer can dissolve in various temperatures of water. The core of this procedure is to determine the impact that temperature has on how fast something dissolves. My hypothesis for this experiment would be that the Alka Seltzer that dissolves the fastest would be the one that was placed in the water with the highest temperature. There will be controlled and manipulated variables explained throughout the experiment. The two main things used in this experiment will be the solute and the solvent, which is Alka Seltzer and water.…

Fries taste good because fast food companies use artificial flavoring and beef tallow oils in their fries which ensures uniform taste, customer satisfaction, and competition. In the article "Why Fries Taste So Good," the author, Eric Schlosser, argues that the main factor in the success of the fast food industry is artificial flavoring and food coloring. He explains how chemical flavors created by flavorists give fast food its taste and smell, and explains the difference between artificial and natural flavors. He argues that natural and artificial flavors have the same chemical makeup and that the difference between them is the process in which they are made.…

All living systems contain buffer solutions to sustain the structure and activity of biological components such as DNA, RNA, proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids. Buffer solutions are remarkably resistant to pH changes and generally consist of a weak acid and its conjugate base or a weak base and its conjugate acid. In the laboratory, artificially made buffers are often used to help maintain a biological system at the proper pH. A laboratory buffer should be inert in the system being studied. For example, Tris buffer is unsuitable for some protein assays because it reacts with the assay components.…
