Gulliver's Travels Book Analysis

Gulliver’s Travels is a very well-known book, and has never been out of print ever since its first publication (McCrum, 1). In four books, it tells the story of a man who ended up in four unknown places. However, one thing that stands out is how the author uses essentially the same plot in each of his four books. The stories follow a specific pattern, and although the pattern is obscure sometimes, it is still there. In each story, Gulliver sets out to sea, ends up in an unknown land, and later escapes or is forced to leave. In each book in Gulliver’s Travels, Gulliver sets out on his journey, leaving his family behind. In the first book he sets out because his business failed and he was looking for some other way to support his family. He …show more content…
In the first book, Gulliver longs to go home, and finally escapes when a chance arises. He describes his departure on page eighty-two, when he says, “Having thus prepared all things as well as I was able, I set sail on the twenty-fourth day of September, 1701, at six in the morning.” In this quote, we can see that Gulliver had no hesitation in leaving the Lilliputians, and was relieved to be free again. However, in the fourth book, the circumstances are quite different. When Gulliver was told he had to leave the Houyhnhnms, he records his reaction as a dramatic one, saying, “I was struck with the utmost grief and despair at my master’s discourse, and being unable to support the agonies I was under, I fell into a swoon at his feet: when I came to myself he told me, that he concluded I had been dead” (Swift, 279). Gulliver was so emotionally attached to the Houyhnhnms, that at the prospect of leaving, he was so devastated that he fainted. Although these two departures are different, Gulliver was still left the islands after a period of time, and returned

    1. (Gulliver critiquing his suit made by the Luputian tailor) “ He first took my altitude by a quadrant, and then, with a rule and compasses, described the dimensions and outlines of my whole body, all which he entered upon paper; and in six days brought my clothes very ill made, and quite out of shape, by happening to mistake a figure in the calculation. But my comfort was, that I observed such accidents very frequent, and little regarded. “ I think that this quote is important because it shows how even little ways of doing things are different between the two worlds. Gulliver, had he been making the suit, would have used a measuring tape like most would assume to do.…

When Gulliver lands on the island of Lilliput, he discovers the race of the Lilliputians, who are six-inch tall people. While Gulliver is physically much larger than the Lilliputians, being a six-foot tall man, he is quite larger than the lilliputians in character and morale. Many examples of Gulliver’s “bigness” and the Lilliputians “littleness” are demonstrated throughout, such as Gulliver urinating on the palace to extinguish the fire, though a peculiar way to go about the issue, it was effective. However, the Lilliputians, especially the Queen did not care about their saved palace, but instead were completely absorbed in the appalling nature of such a crude act. Not only that, but there government was full of corrupt practices in the way…

Through the voyages of Swift’s fictional character, Gulliver, and the use of satire and absurd situations, Swift points out the flaws in humanity. In each voyage, the inhabitants provide Gulliver and the readers with new perspectives on the world via language and communication and demonstrate how these facets of the four societies allow Gulliver to understand the cultural and societal values of the people. More specifically in Laputa and in the land of the Houyhnhnms, language and communication are satirized to show the realities of the state in which men live. The Houyhnhnms’…

The movie is somewhat accurate, besides the fact the Lilliputians speak english as soon as he arrives, and the additional plot that was added throughout the movie that was not present in the book. In the book, there is much more of a story and behind the scenes, meaning in older English politics, the people and cultures are represent history and issues that the english have/had experienced. Gulliver is always different in every place he goes, from the giant to midget, and from uncared for, to respected, Gulliver has run ins with the powers of physical might vs. what is morally right, just as we do in today’s…
