Power In Gulliver's Travels

Throughout Gulliver’s Travels, Gulliver becomes understanding and empathetic towards the many different populations he meets. Long after his voyage to Lilliput, Gulliver speaks of himself as a Lilliputian, though he abandons this perspective once he arrives in Brobdingnag and goes from powerful to powerless. Gulliver becomes increasingly less invested in the perspectives of new islands as he becomes more experienced and jaded towards travel, but by the time that Gulliver reaches the island of Houyhnhnms, he must reexamine his own societal power, as he is neither of the dominant Houyhnhnms class or subservient Yahoos. The prejudices and ideology of the Houyhnhnms have been ingrained into Gulliver’s lifestyle and mindset, remaining influential …show more content…
Approached with their paws, he strikes their hands because he cannot believe they have good intentions, and his violence could be interpreted as a move towards dominance. Gulliver cannot immediately recognize them as a population partially deprived by the Houyhnhnms, who view their treatment towards the Yahoos as benevolent, one of the two defining actions of their society. Yahoos and Houyhnhnms are not intellectually unalike compared to Gulliver’s societal standards, for example, neither has written language or clothing, but Gulliver is more willing to approach and learn from the Houyhnhnms partially because of their dominant role and partially because of his prejudices against Yahoos. Like the Houyhnhnms, Gulliver is appalled by the physical working ability of the Yahoo, and when Gulliver is examined by the Houyhnhnms, they conclude that he must be a “perfect Yahoo” from his dress, skin color, and absence of a body utilized made for physical work. Empathy fails Gulliver because he cannot imagine himself equal to the class or nature of the Yahoos, and his vision of humanity itself has been negatively affected by his ostracization from Lilliput, his subservience in Brobdingnag, and even by his shipmates who cast him off of his

    1. (Gulliver critiquing his suit made by the Luputian tailor) “ He first took my altitude by a quadrant, and then, with a rule and compasses, described the dimensions and outlines of my whole body, all which he entered upon paper; and in six days brought my clothes very ill made, and quite out of shape, by happening to mistake a figure in the calculation. But my comfort was, that I observed such accidents very frequent, and little regarded. “ I think that this quote is important because it shows how even little ways of doing things are different between the two worlds. Gulliver, had he been making the suit, would have used a measuring tape like most would assume to do.…

He overcomes in the story with the help of Glumdalclitch when she shows Gulliver kindness and compassion instead of calling him a freak of nature and trying to kill him. It is obvious that others can also see that Glumdalclitch has shown kindness to him when it states, ¨Glumdalclitch should still continue in her office of tending me, because he observed we had a great affection for each other.¨ This shows that Glumdalclitch´s interactions with Gulliver have helped him over come his fear on the giants. This is one way that Gulliver´s interactions with Glumdalclitch help develop a theme of over coming fear. Another way that Gulliver overcomes his fears is when he…

Tom Sawyer read society’s books, which encouraged him to kidnap and ransom people and even toy with a man’s life. When he describes his plan to the gang, he tells them to keep the women “till they’re ransomed… [as] [he’s] seen in books.” When trying to free Jim in his eccentric, adventurous way, he explains to Jim that “a prisoner’s got to have some kind of a dumb pet”, and he puts dangerous snakes, rats, and spiders in Jim’s cell. In these examples, books corrupt a boy’s mind, and these lessons carry on to adulthood. This can be seen through Pap’s thinking when he rants to Huck about how blacks are inferior and should have less rights than whites.…

In The Wretched of the Earth, Frantz Fanon alludes to sources of power for both colonizers and colonized. Colonizers gain their power from both physical and psychological violence, whereas the colonized must gain power over the colonizers through physically violent rebellion. Hannah Arendt, in Crises of the Republic, takes a very different view of power. While she agrees that occasionally violence is used to exert power and control, true power comes from the concerted efforts of the group, not necessarily from violence. The outcomes of these two very different theories of power are worlds apart, with Fanon demanding violent revolt and Arendt espousing peaceful civil disobedience.…

In a period of strict intellectual censorship, Czech writer and playwright Vaclav Havel rebelled against the Czechoslovakian communist regime in the best way he knew how: by writing. An activist and dissident, Havel uses his essays and his plays to undermine the authority of the totalitarian communist government. In his 1978 political essay, The Power of the Powerless, Havel show his dissatisfaction with he calls the post-totalitarian system. He presents a moral argument against the system, that one can contribute to the toppling of the system by simply living the truth— living in tune with ones beliefs and values. He exposes the dichotomy between what the system says it is and what the system really is and urges people to not live “within…
