The oil spill that happened in the gulf of mexico is best known as deepwater horizon. This accident was caused by the failure of components of the oilrig and the failure of crucial safety test. The crew failed to properly secure the oilrig. They secured the borehole by filling it with cement. The cement failed to secure the well and led to the explosion. Another reason this accident happened was due to the oilrig which is connected to a pipe. The pipe is connected to a blowout preventer. The blowout preventer is about 54 feet tall and has many components. One of the parts that consist of the blowout preventer is a blind shear ram. This blind shear ram cuts the pipe and closes the well. But this isn’t what exactly happen, the well wasn’t closed

The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill was a tragic mishap on BP’s behalf, killing several rig workers and having many other outreaching effects. The amount of crude oil that was spilled into the Gulf of Mexico over the course of approximately three months was 4.9 million barrels of oil and to go along with that, 2 million gallons of chemical dispersants to the Gulf. A major group of crude oil, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) was discovered along the northern shorelines of the Gulf of Mexico. PAH effected several species of wildlife including Dolphins, the Tundra Peregrine Falcon, and shrimp. PAH or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, concentration levels in May 2010 were higher than in May 2011, a mere five times higher, which indicates…

FACTORS The BP oil spill directly affected the health of the environment in very harmful ways. In an account of the environmental losses regarding the BP oil spill, a famous writer for the Washington Post, Kevin Nance (2015), illustrates a reflection of the consequences in the wake of this disaster: “We remember the giant oil slick burning on the water, blackening the beaches, clogging the marshlands, choking and killing the fish and wildlife.” Many forms of wildlife suffered throughout this highly preventable incident, ruining fragile ecosystems permanently, despite the endless efforts of engineers and environmental specialists. Even 5 years after this spill, the consequences are still prevalent and largely noticeable.…

In 2010, we were in the midst of the British Petroleum gulf oil spill. Close to 60 days into the fiasco, there had been no mention of FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency). From the title of this government agency, one would think it would be involved. This is a demonstration of what is wrong with our humble, bloated government. Watching news reports on the oil spill, one saw many branches of government flailing around doing what?…

The first report published in Science magazine focused on the effect of the methane (CH4) release. In contrast to the earlier published article the second, published in Environmental Science magazine amassed data on the spread of the CH4 plumes. While in ordinary conditions CH4 in the ocean is no cause for alarm, the natural process being able to be safely transported out in the form of CO2. This conversion process is called oxidation.…

Exporting products is truly beneficial for every country's economic development. Canada having the third largest volume of oil reserves in the world, export oil through pipelines by transporting it over long distances (Asia Pacific, 2010). Recently, eight major pipeline projects are being proposed in Canada to transport increased oil production to the market (Joseph et al., 2015). Many economists saw these projects as something that would provide economic benefits to the country such as providing access to new markets (Minardi, 2013). However, many environmentalists and activists saw these as something that will raise the risk of a major oil spill (National Post, 2011).…

Description of the activity: The activity involves a small scale simulation of oil spill clean-up and containment protocol including the use of booms, skimming, and other techniques. The simulation will be performed by filling plastic cups with water, adding oil to the water to simulate an oil spill, and then participants will be given the freedom to experiment with the optimal method for removing the oil from the water or stopping it from "contaminating" other areas by using provided materials like spoons and tamper evident bands from water bottles and milk jugs. For instance, a child might decide to remove the oil from the water by scooping it out with a spoon in which case a volunteer would explain how their method is similar to a real life technique called skimming; likewise, if the child decided to contain the spill by encircling it with a tamper evident band (or some other buoyant material like a rubber band), a volunteer could explain that the band is a metaphor for the use of booms to contain oil spills. If a child didn't want to experiment by themselves, the volunteer could show them how each material is similar to using a technique actually employed in oil spills.…

In February 2010, before the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, unusual mortality rates of dolphins started to be recorded and researched; a fact BP uses to deny any causation of increased mortality due to the oil spill. They argue that other factors play roles in dolphin death, including exposure to fresh water, cooler climates, red tide, and diseases such as Morbillivirus and Brucella. Because of these other potential causes is it hard to say if the increase in deaths is from the oil spill, but one group of scientists decided to look into the what the cause may be. The unusual mortality event triggered a popular study done by a team of NOAA scientists led by Lori Schwacke (PhD specializing in marine animal health) to look into the potential link…

Many different stakeholders were economically affected as a result of the spill, both directly and indirectly. Fisherman in the area, as well as hotels, restaurants, and other businesses tied to tourism, felt the most immediate effect. Days after the wellhead explosion, federal and state governments began closing fishing grounds, as well as some of the Gulf’s richest fishing grounds for species such as shrimp, menhaden and oysters. The commercial production of fish reduced by 20% due to fishery closures. In total, the Gulf of Mexico commercial fishing industry was estimated to have lost $247 million due to the post spill fishing closures (Cleveland and Saundry, 2015).…
