The theme of the short story, “All Summer in a Day” is guilt. The children were mean to Margot because she had memories of the sun. Margot remembers what the sun was like, and the other children didn’t. This made them angry, and jealous of her, and caused them to isolate and harass her. “...the sun is a flower, That blooms for just one hour.” “You’re lying, you don’t remember!” These feelings caused the children to lock Margot in a closet. All of the children had an amazing time in the sun, albeit unearned. When the sun finally disappears, they realize what they had done, and how mean they had been to Margot.
