Guillain Barre Syndrome Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS) is an autoimmune disease affects the peripheral nervous system. The defining symptom of this syndrome is the body is attacking itself. GBS does affect both males and female of any age but most common seem to be between the ages 30 to 50 years old. A variety of symptoms can occur depending on the severity of the disease. Since this is a very aggressive disease, early and quick diagnosing is essential to the recovery of the patient. Physicians will study all the symptoms the patient is presenting. Then the physician will order an emergency spinal tap to analyze the protein levels in the body. Other testing will include electrocardiogram and electromyogram tests. Treatment will start immediately after the results have confirmed the diagnosis of GBS. Symptoms usually start in the lower extremities and gradually work its way up the body as the condition worsens. Currently, there is no known cure for Guillain Barre Syndrome. In most cases the symptoms will be seen within the first hours or days of disease onset, depending on the severity. Some of the first signs and symptoms are numbness and tingling in the lower extremity. Then gradually the disease starts affecting the trunk, arms, and cranial region. As the disease worsens symptoms such as; numbness and tingling, loss of tendon reflexes in arms and legs, cramp-like pain in muscles, uncoordinated movement, poor blood pressure control, abnormal heart rate, blurred vision, difficulty moving facial muscles, and muscle contractures. GBS can produce life threatening symptoms such as; temporarily stopped breathing, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, drooling, fainting, feeling light-headed when standing
