Guided Math Reflection

Reflection for Week Ten During guided math this week I realized just how big of a gap there is between the higher level learners and the lower level learners in my classroom. Even though I have spent extra time working with the lower level students, they receive academic assistance in the classroom on Fridays, and they receive small group lessons with the math tutor every Wednesday, having the opportunity to work with them daily during guided math put a different perspective on just how much this group of students struggle academically. These students have a difficult time retaining the information they are taught. For example, we have been working on even and odd numbers since the first day of school. During our unit review on the first day of guided math, these students could not decide if a number was even or odd. Once I provided them with an example and reminded them of the methods to use to prove …show more content…
The same thing occurred when reviewing standard form and expanded form. Once they were given an example they were able to distinguish between standard and expanded form and write numbers in both forms without any hesitation. This really baffled me and bothered me. I feel like these students need all my time during guided math even though that is not possible, since I have three additional groups to see each day. Throughout the week I tried to come up with memorable methods to teach this group of students. When I introduced double facts to the lowest level of students, I used a hand held mirror. Each student was given a mirror and asked to look into it. What did they see? They saw themselves, but this was an example of how they doubled. Next, I asked them to hold up one finger in front of the mirror. One of their fingers plus the finger in the mirror was a total of two fingers with the double fact being one plus one. We continued until we used all of our fingers to practice the double facts. The following day students

It became evident that while Athena was confident in reading, writing and ordering numbers up to and beyond the thousands, which aligns with the Year 4 ‘Number and Place Value’ content descriptor in the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics (ACMNA072), her lack of understanding about place value within a base-ten system meant that she could not interpret numbers comfortably in order to solve problems to align with (ACMNA073) (ACARA, 2016). While she knows the procedures for adding and subtracting numbers that bridge decades and hundreds and can show correct working out on paper, her mental strategies regarding place value needed practice. It was determined that activities in which manipulatives could support the mental strategies needed could help, as suggested by Burns (2004). The intention was to segue into this first by revising her understanding of two digit numbers and developing sense of number…

Many times, especially in science, we distance. Students can not relate long distance, so converting the distance into football fields helps the students grasp the relation. One thing I do struggle with is going very basic with math. Showing students the various ways to work a problem and taking it step by step. I have a certain way that I work math…

While all students deserve to be treated equally, part of that equality is that they all have a fair shot at receiving a quality education. In my future classroom, I plan to work closely with my struggling students and to utilize strategies such as those presented in this reading. In general, mathematics is a difficult subject to grasp and can be made even more challenging due a language barrier or a fear of speaking up. Strategies, such as those highlighted in this reading, are needed to help all students to achieve their…

I was originally enrolled into a math 100 course that was to take place on Fort Rucker starting 11 Jan 2016. This class was a Tuesday and Thursday night class from 5:00 pm - 6:15 pm. I received a call from a Enterprise State Community College representative on 8 January 2016, the Friday before that class began. I was informed that the class had been cancelled and they left me with the option to take the online Math 100 class instead. I accepted that offer and on 11 January 2016 I had complete access to the online course.…

Hi Dr. N, What I would like to reflect on about my teaching is teaching IEP math. Thursday, May 4th was my first time teaching IEP math. While I was unsure what to expect I came up with a lesson to the best of my ability and tried it with my students. I learned that I need to really step away from the module and teach what it is teaching but in a different way. For example, I am attempting to teach my students about Bonds how they're two parts ( 2 numbers added together) which equal a whole (the answer).…

The concepts I have learned in this course will not only help me in my future work, but have also given me extremely useful life knowledge to apply to my personal life. I think it’s important that every adult has an understanding of auto and workers compensation insurance. Then as far as my future career in business, the concepts of general liability and property insurance are sure to apply whether I choose the finance or risk management route. The first concept in this course was commercial general liability and property insurance. Although I was unable to attend the first lecture, I was able to understand key concepts by reading the textbook chapters.…

As a teacher, one will have many different types of students. There will be students who understand material quickly and then there will be students who have real difficulty with understanding the material being taught. I have seen this first hand in my kindergarten religious school class that I teach every week. There is a student, for the sake of this paper we will call him Donny, who has real difficulty dealing with new content. Learning new things is very difficult for him and the activities tailored to help the students understand the material does not do well with him.…

During my tutoring session I had at the Learning Center Jennifer and I went over my topics. The main topic she helped me with was working on topic sentences working on my body paragraphs. Figuring out the effect of each appeal was the details within the body paragraphs. After working on the body paragraphs we worked on how I started my paragraphs. Jennifer said, “Add my judgment and do more than just announce the topic.…

Apart of being a leader involves new experiences, “If you just keep bringing in a new agenda every two or three years, you will be mediocre, period” (p.203). In order to lead you have to have experience and drive. Experience is what allows us to change and grow. Without changes people would not be able to transform into leaders. Students are challenged to pick a side of whether they are willing to work hard toward academic success or not. During the lesson, students were asked what they had after one apple was sliced half. The responses Mr. Escalante received varied but included two halves or fifty percent (Robb, 2016). I do feel that my experience in student teaching has pushed me into becoming a more reliable person. Many times, during my student teaching, I was prompted by teachers to perform easy actions such as reading a book to a class or teaching a whole lesson or unit. Being that my mentor teacher is the one giving me my job, I feel more inclined to perform just about anything she asks. With that type of mentality, I dedicated myself to becoming anything that I teacher needed me to be. I face challenges at school in a more internalized way now.…

This past October, I applied to be a tutor for both The Study and Student Athlete Support Services here at Loyola. As a tutor, I spend about 3-6 hours a week in The Study, located on the 3rd floor of Jenkins Hall, helping fellow students and student-athletes better understand their class material. However, The Study is also used as a workspace, utilized by Loyola students for individual studying, group projects, as well as tutoring sessions. Students that are together in The Study at the same time are part of a gathering, which Goffman defines as “any set of two or more individuals whose members include all and only those who are at the moment in one another’s immediate presence” (Goffman, 18). More specifically, this gathering would be instrumental,…
