Many people left Nieve’s life, from Fausto, to friends and acquaintances. The biggest lost she felt was when her old friend Alan had to leave to Mexico. They were together as good friends for a large part of Nieve’s childhood and adolescence. Alan kissed Nieve goodbye and jumped the fence to go his way, while Nieve watched. Guerra writes: “In that instant, I wanted to die.” (197) This is a traumatic moment for Nieve because she knew Alan for so long. A lot of people left Nieve’s life except for Alan. Nieve thought that not everyone leaves, until Alan did, which made her want to die. At the end of the story, Nieve lived with her mother and everyone else left her life; her friends, acquaintances, and the two men who shared an intimate relationship with Nieve. This negatively changed Nieve. Guerra writes: “I didn’t cry because I’ve already cried too much over the same losses. In a way, I should be used to all this; it’s been this was since I was born.” (252) This quote shows Nieve’s feeling towards people leaving. She saw that so many people left her life, so she understands why she does not cry. Nieve says that she is used to people leaving because her whole life consisted of people coming and going. Nieve does not feel really bad about it anymore. This idea is bad because it is making Nieve ill will and makes her think that everyone that is brought into her life will eventually
