I rolled out of bed at 3:30am on Monday morning, wondering what the heck I got myself into. Half asleep, I turned off my alarm and proceeded to get dressed and pack my clothes and toiletries. After checking to make sure I had everything in my bag to get through the week, I placed it in the trunk of my ‘95 Buick Regal, grabbed a water bottle and granola bar and headed out. It was the summer after my senior year of high school and I had agreed to help a family friend roof houses until school started. I had never roofed before and not knowing what I had gotten myself into, I said yes and now I was driving halfway across the state at four in the morning. Being a K-State fan, I was actually pretty excited to go even though it was for work. When we showed up I found out we were actually working on the new dorms on campus. We were working with a company called Diamond Roofing, and at first I had a smile on my face but it soon went away after having a carry 25gal propane tank up eight flights of stairs. Commercial roofing was a lot different than residential, we were required to wear hard hats and glasses, also instead of nailing shingles down we cleaned everything and mopped bitumen(a kind of tar) over the whole thing and rolled out sheets of asphalt. The rolls weighed twice as much as the shingle bundles and would leave your arms covered in shards of fiberglass and it was nearly impossible to keep it from happening. After they were unrolled we would then use a propane torch to seal the whole thing. While there we stayed in a hotel which was a big step up compared to what I had been in all summer but work was still miserable. I was happy to finally have my last day, although I didn’t want to leave Manhattan it was nice to be
