Executions of the Third of May and Guernica
The two, prominent paintings “Guernica” by Pablo Picasso and “Executions of the Third of May” by Francisco de Goya both record and commemorate events that have taken place. These paintings are antiwar symbols that are still looked upon today in grief. Even though both paintings are from two very different time periods they both show an outcry of the nation of Spain in pain and dismay. In 1808, under Napoleon's orders, France invaded Spain in order to gain full control of the country. On May 3, 1808 numerous Spanish men and women rebelled this invasion. The rebel men and women were then rounded up by French soldiers and killed for rebelling on the streets of Madrid, Spain with no one being spared. The horrifying event then sparked a Madrid native citizen Francisco De Goya to paint the event. The Nazis offered to aid the general in exchange that they were able to test their new aircraft in Spain. On April 27, 1937 the first known bombing of civilian population happen to a city in northern Spain called Guernica. The death toll is not completely known but it ranges between 200-1600. The bombing went on for three hours. There was continuous fire. The only reason the Nazis committed a crime against humanity like this is that they wanted to test and see if their aerial bombs were as powerful as they thought. Pablo Picasso was in Paris while the bombings on Guernica occurred and did not find out until four days after it happened. In Paris Picasso was working on a mural for the Eiffel Tower but immediately after hearing the news he began Guernica and finished it in under two months. He was shocked and horrified as he was originally from
