The Viet Cong’s guerilla war was led from both North Vietnam and from local command posts around South Vietnam, some of which were underground. The most famous of these underground command posts is Cu Chi, which was located in the Cu Chi district of South Vietnam’s capital, Saigon. This command post consisted of a system of tunnels and underground chambers that extended for over 200 miles. It served not only as a main command post for Viet Cong forces in and around Saigon, but also provided hospitals, cafeterias, sleeping chambers, and training areas for soldiers. Cu Chi also served as a massive bunker complex for Vietnamese trying to escape the American bombing
