Guatemala Human Rights Violations Analysis

Decent Essays
Right now there are many different human rights violations going on in Guatemala. Some of the violations include genocide, police brutality, and crimes against women. The reason that the crimes against women are happening is because people in Guatemala look down on women. Men think that women are below them which is definitely not true. Police brutality and genocide are happening because people think that they have the power or right to treat people like nonhumans and do whatever they want. People should care about helping Guatemalan people because there is genocide, police brutality, and crimes against women happening there right now and it is our job to help them. In Guatemala genocide is being committed by a man named Rios Montt. According …show more content…
Erwin Sperisen, a police chief, “was found guilty of the murders of seven men” (“Former Guatemalan police, 2014). People should care about this because there are innocent people being murdered by police for no reason at all. Another reason people should care is because the police killing people aren’t even being punished for what they’re doing. Police think that just because they are police they are higher than everyone and can do what they feel like doing. Police are committing crimes not only against inmates in prison but also towards transgenders. In 2006 a group of transgender people were murdered and according to the article “Guatemala: Transgender people” (2006), the assailants were wearing police uniforms and riding police motorcycles. Also, in Guatemala, children are needing to be protected by so called “peacekeepers”. In June of 2015, “allegations surfaced that peacekeepers in the CAR abused 10 boys they were deployed to protect” (“Opinion: End sexual exploitation by peacekeepers”, 2015). The people should care about this because it’s disgusting and no one should have to feel unsafe with someone who should be protecting …show more content…
Women in Guatemala are being killed everyday and the people committing the crimes are getting away with it. According to the article “Time to end” (2013), “685 women were killed in 2010 alone”. The worst part about these crimes happening is that the murderers aren’t even being punished. The authorities in Guatemala are one of the reasons why these crimes keep on happening because they don’t protect them. “Authorities in Guatemala are putting the lives of women at risk by systematically failing to protect them.” (“Time to end,” 2013). One other reason these crimes keep happening is because “perpetrators know they will not be punished” (“Guatemala must act,” 2011). Since they know they will not be punished they just keep killing all the women they want to kill. People need to care about this because this is not right and should be stopped. A way this could be stopped is to start punishing whoever is killing the women and put them in

Department of State official, this article is very much unbiased, as it is a report from an outside source from Guatemala. The account describes how the kidnappings in the country were mostly carried out by Guatemala’s government in order to interrogate the victims, mostly male Indians, about their actions and kill them later. However, the U.S. State Department had admitted in the statement that they did not have very accurate data on Guatemala’s human rights conditions. The information gathered may not be credible; nevertheless, an outside viewpoint of the situations in Guatemala is still helpful with its unprejudiced…

In his essay “For Cops…” Kevin Johnson claims that videos of police officers are placing their actions under new scrutiny and changing the way that claims against officers are played out in court. Police have responded by trying to limit such recordings when they feel that they interfere with police actions. The fear that is most present in law enforcement is that these videos will cause officers to change how they behave in a life or death situation. To combat this, officers are now receiving training to deal with being recorded.…

Many people are questioning the legitimacy of the police report, and wondering whether this was yet another example of police violence towards minorities. While this incident did occur within the United States, police officers abusing their power is a major issue worldwide. It will probably never be known what was going through the officers ' minds when they shot Hernandez, but regardless of their thought process, it was completely unnecessary for them to use lethal force.…

Police brutality against minorities is a big issue in the United States, and there is almost an incident a day in America. Police have an immense amount of power that they can tap into, but some offices do abuse that power. By doing this, there are often incidences almost weekly where police use excessive and sometimes deadly. Keeping the peace, law enforcement, protection of people and property and the investigation of crimes is what police officers are meant to do in their line of duty and responsibilities. However, abuse of power and work stress are high indicators that our protectors should sometimes be looked at as suspects to criminal activities. Police brutality has become so widespread due to cell phone and security cameras depicting these violent acts that have never received this type of exposure before. Several major trends have given rise to a host of police practices that not only unlawfully interfere with the exercise of protective speech but also result in affirmative harm to innocent individuals. Some of these trends include punishment absent unlawful…

If you attempt to Google “victimization of those that work in the system”, the first thing that is going to come up is someone else asking, “Can police officers be victimized?” Needless to say, I felt that the Internet could not help me, so if this makes no sense, I apologize. Anyways, I thought about that question on Google that had a seemingly obvious answer. Those who work in the system are only human, meaning that of course, they can be victimized. If we look at them just as people, the list of types of victimization could be never ending.…
