Gsa Reflection

Very recently, another GSA leader and close friend, Jewell, came to me with some troubling news. A picture circulating Twitter within our school's community had shown up on her dashboard, one that was very frustrating and upsetting. It depicted a student making rude gestures in front a display case decorated with symbols of LGBT+ appreciation and "Safe Space" posters. This was project our Gender Sexuality Alliance had worked very hard on to foster a more accepting environment within our high school. Upon showing me this insensitive picture, both Jewell and I were angry at the ignorance of the students who participated or encouraged this behavior. After expressing our emotions and allowing ourselves to calm down, we both knew that action had to be taken. It wasn't in the forefront of clubs and mostly kept to itself. As of this year, the organization has changed from the Gay Straight Alliance to the Gender Sexuality Alliance to be more inclusive and welcoming to all students. It was because of that change that I joined the GSA with year. Along with the change in title, the group sponsor had also changed. Mrs. Powers wanted the GSA to be more visible and active within the school. We all knew that with an increase in visibility there would be an increase in backlash. Despite knowing this information, the offensive picture and comments were still frustrating to deal with. Creating a more accepting and safe environment for all of the my school's students has always been very important to me. No student should feel unsafe or scared in their community. And I did my part to help make my school a little less ignorant to the effects of their words on others. I strive to make the world a better place in any way I can.
