The Effects of Mindset on Education and Self-Development

One 's mindset is a crucial part of one 's life. An individual’s mindset is essentially their unique attitude toward something. Mindset affects each individual differently. Fundamentally, there are two basic mindsets. First, the fixed mindset is the belief that one 's ability is fixed and cannot change. The fixed mindset never wants to get problems wrong and often runs from hard challenges. Second, the growth mindset is the notion that one can grow their ability through hard work and effort. An individual with a fixed mindset gains comfort from doing things they’re already good at and wants to be perfect right away. They believe all ability is natural and gained from birth. They believe their abilities can’t change and that genes define intelligence. Consequently, an individual with a fixed mindset often doesn 't answer questions or take chances.
Conversely, the growth mindset is the belief that one 's abilities can grow through hard work and effort. An individual with a growth mindset often loves a challenge and takes failure as a learning experience. They think learning gaining skills are signs of success. Those with a growth mindset truly believe effort makes one improve; thus, the growth mindset is always trying to learn, gain skills, and put in effort and hard work to reach their full potential.
The fixed mindset negatively affects most things in life, especially one’s learning path. An individual with a fixed mindset never wants to be wrong and often runs from challenges. They think that test scores are the only indication of one’s intelligence, and that their intelligence is an innate trait. They believe that if they were naturally smart, they shouldn 't have to put in effort which causes them not to try harder even when they receive a low score. The Fixed mindset believes their abilities cannot change and they run from challenging problems. The fixed mindset is scared to put forth effort because they’re afraid to fail. They believe if they don 't complete a challenge correctly, they’re stupid, which causes them to never put effort into growing and trying to be better. Essentially, an individual with a fixed mindset blocks themselves from further development.
On the other hand, the growth mindset can positively affect one’s self-development. Individuals with a growth mindset believe their abilities can grow and develop. Those with a growth mindset believe every loss and failure is an experience to grow from. They believe that hard work and effort can change their ability. The growth mindset can help one reach their full potential.
While it may seem clear that the growth mindset is the mindset to have, it may not be so easy to acquire. To get a full education and to fully self-develop, one must acquire the growth mindset and put in effort to reach one’s full potential.
