Some children have to grow up too rapidly. What I mean is that some people’s families might not be there, with them, so they have to do everything by themselves. Children whe live in the “hood” are usually the people who grow up too quickly . I say this because they have to be tougher to survive, their parents aren't there, or they aren't with them when the children need them. In the book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton the greasers have to grow up too fast. They do this because their parents are either dead, they abuse them, or they just don’t want them. S.E Hinton reveals in The Outsiders that some children have to grow up too faster than they should to survive the world they are living in.
In the beginning of the novel you can tell that all of the boys are growing up too fast by smoking, carrying around switchblades, and getting arrested at the age of ten. An example of growing up too fast is when Ponyboy said, “ His father was beating him up, and his mom ignored him, except when she hacked off at something and man you could hear her yelling clear down at our house” (12). Hinton put The Outsiders. An example is when Ponyboy said “Johnny had started smoking when he was 9; Steve started at 11. So no one thought it was weird when I started” (97). The boy used smoking as a way to look tough. Another example is when Johnny said “ I killed a kid last night” (74). Like I said Johnny used killing a Soc as a way of escaping life, his parents, and the Socs, but in this quote Johnny called the Soc a kid, not Soc, and he said that because they don't see Bob, the Soc, not as a Soc, but a human being.
