Growing up as a kid my family always said “siempre estés orgulloso por lo que eres y no por lo que no eres”, and that meant “always be proud of who you are and not for what you aren’t”. As a Latino you feel different from the rest, but that shows you to be even proud because you see your culture and you’re amazed by the way things are from over cultures. Growing up i saw how wonderful the food was and also how much we eat, and the music! it was the best thing cause’ you felt the rhythm in your feet and just a sensation to dance and I also saw how it brought people together and how much they enjoyed it. I come from both Catholic and Christian family, and both sides are very religious so we celebrate holidays we normally don’t celebrate in the

Most often, they come here to provide a better life for their families, and only want the best for their children. Through the suffering and difficulties Latinos might face, they look to their communities, their church/religion, and their culture for comfort and contentment. The way that the native dancers are proudly dancing in public, even if being at risk of discrimination, demonstrates that pride that Latinos have their culture. In the particular scene shown above, the audience can interpret Latino culture almost as their own, as if one was part of the crowd watching the dance and feeling proud of their…

Although people assume otherwise, I am Latina, and I'm proud to be a part of that community. I obtain my Latin blood from my father, who moved to the United States from Uruguay as a child. My parents divorced each other when I was young; however, when I was with him for either the weekend or the month of July, I embraced all the wonders of my Latin family. Latino culture entails prodigious amounts of cooking, and we always cooked Uruguayan food; it was almost taboo to eat out. From flan to the glorious empanadas, my family always ate homemade meals.…

Growing up, in a Hispanic home I learned the values of life in a differently with hardship but always maintaining closeness. At home, I was taught that family is the most important thing in life. Because of this, I am able to communicate easily with my family members and the Hispanic community.…

Societies are constantly changing, so when I go for vacation the DR the way my cousins speak, the songs the talk about and even the jokes they make, are foreign to me. It means hearing people talk about The Fresh Prince of Belair in school and being the only person not participating in the conversation. All in all, being Hispanic means different things to different people, but for me, it means having a close relationship to my family, being able to navigate through two different worlds, yet not fitting in in neither…

Coming from a Hispanic background means that I have the ability to do more than my peers. Growing up in the United States and living in a Hispanic household gave me the chance to have more than one cultural view. Having more than one cultural view allowed me to develop an open mind that helped broaden my views, and helped me in my life. However, I was often told that the world looks more at your race than it did intelligence, character and integrity. For a while, I believed that statement due to the fact that in middle school, I noticed that there were more successful white people than any other race.…

A tradition in my family on thanksgiving, new years and Christmas eve would be my dad cooking pork for the family to eat. The recipe was taught to him by my paternal grandfather. Being Hispanic is a topic that comes up everyday of my life. For example, in scholarship applications, college applications, AP exam days. The questions is always there, “Are you Hispanic/Latino?”…

Being Hispanic carries so much more meaning than being just another race, it is a lifestyle. It's making delicious tamales with my entire family every year for Christmas festivities. It's the unexpected frijoles inside that butter container in the fridge. It's all your aunts repeatedly telling you that you look fat, yet they’ll keep serving you more food because they care about you. It's that fear when you hear a knock on the door because it’s probably one of your various relatives with their entire family.…

From waking up to the smell of freshly made tortillas and warm beans with rice on Sunday mornings and rushing through the morning to attend noon mass to the tradition of going from house to house singing lullabies to Jesus on Christmas eve, food and catholic tradition are just a small part of what being Hispanic means to me. While there are a multitude of distinct experiences that have guided me to rediscover what Hispanic truly means, I believe that everything can be simplified to family values. Aside from the extraordinary and delicious food, I believe that Hispanic means family; as my good friend, Stitch likes to say, "Family means no one is left behind or forgotten" (Lilo and Stitch). Last year, I left home to attend a university that is a few hours away from my parents' house. At first it was exciting with a newfound sense of liberty; a part of me really enjoyed going to eat at random times of the day or…

Growing Up Too Fast Some children have to grow up too rapidly. What I mean is that some people’s families might not be there, with them, so they have to do everything by themselves. Children whe live in the “hood” are usually the people who grow up too quickly . I say this because they have to be tougher to survive, their parents aren't there, or they aren't with them when the children need them.…

What being Hispanic means to me is more than just having pride for your background, it is also being proud of your heritage and values that you learn from your life experiences. For starters, being Hispanic makes me feel proud of your heritage because Hispanics are known to be hard workers. They are known to always keep on going and not give up easily, to strive above and beyond. Many of our parents came into this country illegally; they put their lives at risk to get here, and have on succeeded and overcome obstacles to give their children a better life, more importantly a chance to an education.…

Since I am only one person, I am going to start off small. In the city of Philadelphia, I grew up in a not so great environment meaning that there was a lot of negative activities going around where I lived. As teenagers and young adults we are completely dependent on our technology to get us through almost any situation. The term technology can mean many different things to different people; some people would define as only their cell phones that they keep on them at all times, others may define technology as their entire electronic arsenal from cell phone to laptop to computer to pager if they have one. Regardless of the definition technology has profoundly changed how we live our day to day lives. By allowing teenagers to be completely connected to anyone at any time they walk away with a new view of the world, a view the older generations don’t have. These views lead to a difference in the ideas of independence and by creating a new kind of…
