The social class that I was put into while growing up was the middle class. The middle class has many advantages towards a child education. For instance, I had the opportunity of attending a public school to increase my education. Many children may be born into a poverty country. This limits the possible knowledge that child may know. Many can argue and say that to get a high education there is no need to be in a high social class. There are plenty of people who feel completely different about this issue and think that in order to get a good education, one must come from a wealthy background. Gregory Mantsios, director of the Joseph S. Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies at Queens College of the City University of New York, gave his audience many examples of how different each social class was in his essay “Class in America 2012”. Some authors who also had something to say in regards to class and education were Jean Anyon, who was a social activist and professor of educational policy in the Ph.D Program in Urban Education at The City University of New…

The “American Dream” has been a central piece of ideology in American culture and history; the thought that any person, regardless of their background, could transcend their assigned socioeconomic class was among the most attractive reasons for coming to the new world. The transition from agrarianism (pre 1850) into industrialism (post 1850) changed the class structure from a relatively fixed one, making it easier for common workers to move their way up to the middle class. A more complex economy allowed them to take different career paths, and were rewarded based off merit rather than ownership. The same new economy allowed common workers to advocate for themselves where previously they could not. Although during these times there were several economic highs and lows, after the industrial revolution, intrinsic efforts from common workers to move into the middle class were more rewarded than they were previously.…

Being born in the middle class or upper class puts the person at a disadvantage for achieving the American Dream. “PARADE surveyed 2,200 Americans 84% said they belonged to the middle class regardless of where they live and how much money the make.” stated by David Wallechinsky in ‘ Is the American Dream Still Possible’ With middle class being the fastest shrinking social class some of those people might be in lower/upper class, thus being middle class and living “the American dream” is a mindset. Living below the poverty line with an average sized family (2.54 people) should not be hard with the average income being around $81,000 and the poverty line being about $18,000 but some people are still starving. The people in the lower class has a bigger dream to obtain.…

Generally, ‘Social Class’ in its simplest form could be defined through the work of Kraus, Cote and Keltner (2010) as “social class arises from the social and monetary resources that an individual possesses. Thus, social class is measured by indicators of material wealth, including a person’s educational attainment, income or occupational prestige” (Sturm and Gibson, 2012, p.3). Arguably, it is essential that social class is acknowledged with such consideration as many people around the world would agree that it determines a child’s success. Although social class revolves mainly around income, educational achievement and occupational status, many sociologists have carried out research and developed this term with a number of labels for the…

It is true that the class system does affect my education, health, and environmental circumstances. A class system creates societal groups of people in a hierarchal scale. This results in unequal opportunities and resources for people lower on the class system, who do not have as much money compared to the people who are richer and higher in the class system. For example, the class system creates inequality within public schools. There are differences in funding between the rich and poor communities.…

‘Social class is conceptualized…”(Culture and Social Class), I feel as though social class and culture can have some similarities, but also be so different at the same time. For me I believe people are put into social class as a judgment. For me social classes are large categories for that Americans and other countries put people into for organization, but also a way to find out whom they can tax. People everywhere could wear the worst clothes, but then go home and actually have a lot of money and no want to show it. That is how I see social class.…

When looking at the diverse conditions in which Betty, Maisha and Steve live, though they are all in the middle, this doubt seems to be appropriate. Yet it would be false to throw the baby out with the bath water and put the all postulated transformations into question. Enaudeau observes that “a growing number of Africans are indeed lifting themselves out of poverty but, contrary to the African economic revolution narrative, this is not happening overnight.” (Enaudeau, 2013). So it is these micro changes, the slow emergence that Maisha, Betty and Steve experienced, who are all doing better than their parents did, that better depict the rising Africa.…
