Growing Up In The Caribbean

Growing up in the Caribbean in what some may call, paradise was like an endless adventure. I was born and raise in the United States Virgin Islands, a United States Territory. I take pride in the fact that I came from an island to Florida to further my education. I left my tiny little island with big dreams of becoming a medical doctor or a research chemist. Coming to the mainland was a big adjustment for me. Big cities and a bigger population was a bit new to me. Transitioning from a high school where my graduating class was 281, to a University whose population is on the upwards side of 2000 was not ideal. Through those experience, I learned that taking on new challenges in life is what makes us grow as a person. It was important not to limit my abilities just because of my own fears or down falls. My acceptance made me further realize that if I had not overcome my distress to face those encounters, I would have missed the great opportunity to become a part of something great and to also determine my true potentials. Experiencing such a dim time during the beginning of my college career was not a perfect start, but maybe going those experience, I can possibly help another student going through the same problems. I solidified my interested in student affairs when I had a conversation with my supervisor (who went through the student affairs path) on my options for graduate school. I began to notice that I enjoyed working on a college campus, not only that, but I enjoy making a difference in the lives of my peers.
