Growing Up In The 80's

Think of life today: cell phones, computers, tablets, and so much more. Ever think of life before this generation? No one had all the great technology people, especially Americans, possess today. People who grew up in the 70’s and 80’s know how dramatically things have changed and the differences that occurred over time. Paula Wenger, 48 of Sinking Spring can relate. Paula grew up in the town of Bristol, PA in Bucks County.
Looking back on her life growing up and having watched her two teenage kids grow, she has noticed some pretty big differences, starting with technology. Back in the 70’s technology was new, and things were just starting out. Technology has developed over time like a sunflower develops from tiny seeds into a big flower. Paula stated, “Growing up in the late 60s and 70s life was a lot different then life growing up today. As a kid no one had the type of cell phones and electronics like today’s society does. When my children were growing up they had multiple technology devices available to them to play with,

“Once when I was a kid I went out with my friends one night and my friend was driving us around. The car randomly broke down and we were stuck in the parking lot of a restaurant. I knew my parents were expecting me soon and if I didn’t get home I would be in a lot of trouble. There was no getting out of it, the car was broken down for good. We did everything to find a pay phone but there was none near. We ended up showing up at home an hour later then we told our parents expected us and got in serious trouble. Nowadays if that were to happen you could call or text your parents and tell them that you were going to be late or call for help.” Looking back on that experience it made a realization for her to see if the technology that we had today, was available back then some problems wouldn’t have occurred and life could’ve been a lot

Kent Harufs Plainsong is an inspiring novel centered around seven characters and their battles with isolation and hopelessness. In the midst of a technologically saturated lifestyle, I stand by the idea that technology’s impact on the United States was once empowering, but has began to hinder the minds of average Americans. Many individuals go about their day without recognition of their use of short cuts that weren’t available a mere ten years ago, let alone the use of developed inventions that began one hundred years ago. I feel immensely fortunate to be apart of what seems like one of the last generations to physically understand what the human race has grown from because technology has shifted our mental and physical capacity to comprehend and teach information. Regardless of the negative and positive perspectives upon technological advances, the emergence of…

Imagine a world where diversity was not relevant. Where white and black people were treated the same. However, that was not the case, the 50s displayed white people much more than black people on TV, but as change within the American Culture occurred from the 50s to the 80s, black people were seen more on TV. Two sitcom comedies; The Cosby Show(1980s), and Father Knows Best (FKB, 1950s) can be compared by connecting each of them to the era in which they aired. As the 1950s sitcom Father Knows Best illustrates a very scripted family lifestyle, the 1980s sitcom The Cosby Show portrays a realistic family, which both demonstrate the culture though their time periods.…

In 1938 (the year that the play Our Town took place), when you were bored you couldn't pull out your smart phone and play a game. When you couldn't sleep, you couldn't listen to music or get on the computer to try and tire yourself out. If the people of Worland went back to 1938, most of the older people in Worland would agree that the teenagers and kids would loose their minds and go insane because they couldn't pull out their phone or listen to their music. Same with the other way around, if the people of Grover's Corner came to the year 2015, they wouldn't be totally well informed about the technology we have today and the people of Worland would have to either teach them how to use it or be forced to hear them complain about the "fancy…

What would you do if you could freeze your favorite event in time forever? Would it be a blessing or a curse? In “Einstein’s Dream,” his entry for 14 May 1905 gives you a visual about some very interesting contrasting views. The entry talks about how, “There’s a place where time stands still,” things are motionless in time. It talks about how the closer you get to the center the more things slow down and the further away you go from the center the faster things seem to speed up.…

It is the summer 2003 and I’m pedaling fast down the street, on my bike, to get to my friend’s house. When I finally reached her house I dumped my bike off with the rest of the bikes, in the front yard, and ran inside to find everyone. I heard people upstairs and hurried up to find them. They were all sitting around talking and playing a board game. Now, think about how much interaction kids had in 2003 rather than 2015.…

After reading Jeannette Walls’ Glass Castle, I realize that she and I have a lot in common. From her parents arguing to her being bullied at school to her father dying, she went through a lot of situations that resemble some of the less known and serious problems that I had while I was about the same age. Jeannette had a tough life while growing up. However, even though I had similar issues, I lived and still live a relatively sheltered life. I, like her, simply viewed everything that happened as normal and didn’t realize that it was abnormal until I got into fifth or sixth grade.…

It seems that no matter what the reimbursement levels are it does not affect the quality of care given by the staff.…
