Growing Up In High School

Improved Essays
Growing up in a small town of Washington state, I never felt a sense of necessity; however, this sense did not root from my family’s resources, but rather the way in which others in my community generously and genuinely served me. From having dedicated high school youth group leaders, to being taught by inspirational and intentional teachers, I always sensed that I was being granted great care and opportunity. As I grew older, the service which I was provided undoubtedly formed a desire in my own heart to return the numerous favors I had received.
In the 8th grade I began teaching kindergarten Sunday school at my church. This opportunity allowed my young 13-year old self to grow, while also aiding my church’s children’s ministries weekly.

On the last week of July, I completed my sophomore service as a volunteer at a Vacation Bible School at a local church. I had gone to the Bible School ever since I was seven but I aged out and decided to become a volunteer. At the Vacation Bible School, the service I preformed was to help the kids and take them to their activities as well as introduce them to Christ. Before the Bible School started, I was nervous and excited to talk to 11 and 12 years old about Christ.…

Growing up I was always the tallest kid in the class. Whenever class picture day rolled around, I knew that I was in the front of the line because of my height. It was somewhat embarrassing when all the boys were shorter than I, and the girls made me feel bad for how out of place I was. Not only did my height provide social awkwardness, it also administered the constant, never ending struggle of finding garments long enough. Whenever my mom or grandmothers wanted to take me back to school shopping, I made excuses of “I don’t need any more habiliments” or “I do not feel good, all of the sudden…”…

In order to fulfill the requirements of this paper, I attended a ministry called Common Ground. Common Ground is an after-school mentoring program for underprivileged children in kindergarten through fifth grade that reside here in Waxahachie, Texas. This ministry has volunteers that help the children with their homework, includes a reading program to help the children become better readers and improve their comprehension skills, and allows the volunteers to spend one-on-one time with the children in order to share the love of Christ to them. While attending this ministry I noticed not only one, but several social needs.…

My life began to spiral downward before fifth grade began. I found myself an endless loop over summer vacation of waking up, experiencing the day as a blur, sleep, then repeat. This drove me to discover a new way to spend my day. On the television I noticed a recurring advertisement for a game called ‘World of Warcraft’. At first I instilled the mindset that I could spend my time pragmatically but eventually I succumbed to boredom.…
