I was raised by a single parent mother, who did not hold an education beyond the 8th grade. We moved more than twice the average person would in a lifetime. With every year came another school. Thus, a considerable amount of school was missed. Consequently, I fell so far behind that by the time I was supposed to be a junior in high school I was only a freshman. If I wanted to excel academically it was time for a new environment, so I moved with my dad in Memphis TN. The program focused mainly on exposing students to professional health careers. Since I previously planned to be a primary care physician, I shadowed Dr. Lawrence Madlock at the University Health Services. Little did I know this program would be a career changing experience. Surprisingly I became interested in the lab aspect of the internship more than anything. The most memorable was when the medical technologist showed myself and the other intern how a urinalysis was performed. Processing a background in science equipped me with the necessary skills to understand what I was being done and why. I could relate even though what I was learning was new.
