Growing Up As An American Citizen

Improved Essays
Growing up as an American citizen has been a privilege for me which I do not take for granted. Considering all of the blessings that have been bestowed onto me, I feel as though it is my obligation to give back to this country. My responsibility of being a good citizen, includes supporting what I believe to be all peoples' natural rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In an effort to protect the first of these rights, I support the Pro-Life movement. I believe that at conception the child truly is a child, and that no one should have the power to end his or her life. I feel it is my responsibility to stand up for the right of that child by participating in the Pro-Life March in Washington D.C. and being

Every unborn child should have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in the second and third trimester. In 2010, research shows that states indicated that unborn children are considered humans under tort, property and criminal law (Roden, 2010). By these laws shown, a mother shouldn’t get to choose whether the fetus lives or dies. The unborn child is its own person and by a mother aborting her own child should be considered murder. Under law a child is supposed to be born for many different reasons, including being capable of having a legacy (Roden, 2010).…

Coming to the United states is already a challenge and sacrifice, so becoming a United States citizen shouldn’t be. I believe becoming a United States citizen is too expensive and the process too long. Many families have broken apart while looking for a better opportunity in this country because they believe coming to this country life will be easier. I recognize people win much more money here than other countries; however, one would never imagine the cost and the duration of naturalization would be this much. I believe naturalization should be like a recognition for permanent residents because they have done so much for this country and devoted their lives working hard to improve their lives.…

There are laws in place that require parental consent in order for a minor to get an abortion, but many feel that it is not enough. They argue that the psychological consequences of having an abortion at a young age are damaging and can negatively impact a teenager’s future development, both physically and mentally. Pro-life arguers generally carry the belief that a fetus is a person upon conception, and is therefore afforded the same rights that any other citizen has. They believe that a fetus is just as human as the rest of the population and deserves to live just as much as any other person does.…

I believe that a person should have to right to do with their body what they believe is right. I don’t think that it is fair for others to try to put their nose in something that is none of their business in the first place. The mother should be in charge of her own life and her own decisions. I think that people are too quick to pass judgment on others based on their own beliefs. For these reasons, I do not think that people should be able to control others decision on the matter of…

What does being an American mean to me? Being an American means that I say the pledge of allegiance, I can vote when I'm of age, but most of all it means that I am a free citizen and that I am proud to live in the United States here in Missouri. But there is much more to being an American than saying the pledge and raising a flag. I've noticed Americans tend to talk a little louder, laugh a little harder and tell their stories more freely. It means that when I grow up I can pick the job I want and vote for the president I want to serve.…

I was born in the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, the place where all my best memories live. My mother gave birth to her first child at the age of 18 then to me a year later, she hadn’t finished high school so she trusted my grandparents to raise us in the city while she went to work in another. There was never a dull moment in our grandparents home, we would play countless games in the water when it rained and the yard would get flooded or get chased around by our guard dog as my family would watch laughing despite my fear of dogs. One of the things I will always be grateful for is growing up in Ethiopia, my days were filled with happiness and adventure that I will forever cherish. Moving to America was a drastic change for my brother and I, we would spend countless nights crying homesick, asking to go back home.…

People are from all over the world and knowing this, we have to be aware of the cultural differences that each person has. Dr. Rose Ihedigbo’s “Sandals in the Snow” and Amparo B. Ojeda’s “Growing Up American: Doing the Right Thing” are both stories on how different cultures are overlooked. Both the Ihedigbo family and Ojeda talked about their cultural differences between where they were from and America. People are known for having sympathetic feelings to a child who is visible over the unborn fetus. However, pro-life activists hold that emotions that cannot form a basis for justifying birth. With the fetus being born or not being born; the fetus does have a chance in becoming a full human being. Viability of a fetus to survive outside the womb independently is when the fetus is able to get that ‘full human being’ status. Abortion also raises ethical issues of character.…
