"Remember that Renee and I are going to that cruise party tonight. With the boys all heading over to Devon’s house for the night, there won’t be anyone here. I’m locking all the doors when I leave, so you’ll have to stay at your house for a while,” Scarlett’s uncle, John, said to her as he packed overnight bags for their “party”.
Scarlett sighed against her chair and willed herself to disappear. “Why can’t I stay here?” she mumbled.
“You haven’t been home in almost five days now. You need to go and see your dad and make sure that he knows that you’re alive,” he grudgingly said.
“I might not be after I see him,” Scarlett mumbled under her breath, sarcastically.
Scarlett’s father was a police officer by day, who worked hard to make sure that

“I don’t care what Renee said. If you don’t even know what you did, then she was just probably in a bad mood. We aren’t going to tell on you Scar,” Seamus assured her. He ran up the stairs to his room to change into his bathing suit.
Scarlett followed him up the stairs with Charlie on her heels. She shut the door behind her and locked it. She shuddered at the thought of her being home alone with only hormonal guys but she couldn’t subdue her internal wish that Charlie would pay more attention to her. She couldn’t remember for the life of her what she could have possibly done to hit her head that hard.
Scarlett put on her flat, black swim suit with green flecks that sparkled in the sunlight. She ran down the stairs and sprinted out the back door with a towel in her hand. Parker and Seamus were already in the pool, while Charlie was just setting his towel on the

“Oh come on you pansy!” Parker splashed up at him. He managed to splash Scarlett more than Charlie.
She screamed from the cold water and walked out of their range.
“There is no way in hell I’m getting in that ice, cold pool!” Charlie said, crossing his arms stubbornly.
Scarlett smiled to herself. She sprinted from the chair to Charlie and jumped onto his back with such force that he tipped into the water with her still on his back. She screamed as the cold water touched her skin.
Charlie whirled around mid-air and grabbed her waist as they fell into the water. He let himself sink with her in his arms until she started to struggle against him. He kept his arms firmly around her waist as he pushed off the bottom of the pool and emerged.
They were both gasping for air, but he still didn’t let her go until she met his eyes with a red face. He shot her a boyish smile that made her smile back instantly.
Charlie’s face leaned towards Scarlett. She was ready for him to kiss her, but he veered off and whispered in her ear.
“I’m too much trouble for you to deal with. Trust me,” he

The sap threatened to suffocate me with it’s sulfurous smell.…
