According to the text, “Introducing Public Administration”, the major factors that lead to groupthink in any organization are an illusion of invulnerability, collective construction of rationalizations, belief in inherent morality, stereotyped views of groups, direct pressure on dissenters, self-censorship, illusion of opinion and establishment of mind guards.
The case study discusses the social psychologist Solmon Asch article “Effects of Group Pressure upon the Modification and Distortion of Judgments,” and psychologist Irving Janis study on “groupthink.” In Asch study, he was able to provide evidence of how a group can impact an organization. Janis defined “groupthink” as when the people within a group desire coherence or a conformism more so than dissension (Shafritz Russell, Borick, pg277) In result, this type of approach in a group creates illogical or dysfunctional decision. Both Janis and Asch study supported that within a group, there is a loss of individuality, originality and self-governing thinking due to the pressure to conform. This also can lead to dehumanizing actions.
Equally important, groupthink is not only a historical interest, it is still a common occurrence in government today around the world.
