Groupthink Effectiveness

As a leader I can help prevent Groupthink by encouraging all group members to speak their minds openly, and I would set the perspective that disagreement is necessary for the group to be effective. I have seen some leaders speak on viewpoints opposite of what the team is suggesting and ask questions to encourage critical thinking. I would do the same, for the purpose of seeking to engage others in argumentative discussion and explore intentions. Moreover, leaders should make it known that everyone’s opinion counts and we should encourage ideas, thoughts, and opinions. It is equally important for the leader to contribute thoughts and ideas, but as the textbook suggests, “At the outset, leaders should refrain from stating personal preferences or expectations that may bias group discussion”. …show more content…
I would ask questions and seek their point of view, I think this would help explore alternatives, gather additional information, and help examine overseen risks. I would like to instill trust in my followers, and I am all about being fair, therefore; for certain situations I would implement a group technique that will cast everyone’s vote, either for single selection or have them pick their top 4 for preferences, then also allow them to add comments. There are many web platforms and mobile “apps” out there, that I think could help with this for little to no cost. After, researching I found the Modified Borda Count as a technique that I would like to follow, being somewhat shy, I sometimes did not like to speak out in a large group, I think it is important to hear everyone out, and this is a solution to Groupthink, and judgment from in-group
