There have been many groups being oppressed between the 1700’s and the 1990’s. McCarthy described this by saying that “...this is a time when all the world is split into two...” (McCarthy 2). There always seems to be a group being oppressed. In the 1700’s it was witchcraft, and the world was split into those accused of witchcraft and those doing the accusing. Also, in the 1960’s communists were oppressed and the USA was split between those supporting communism and those supporting democracy. Similarly, In the 1990’s women were oppressed, and the world was split between men and women.
