Group Work In American Politics

Improved Essays
Before taking American Politics, I had very mixed feelings on the subject of group work. I could see both it’s highlights and weaknesses, with past ones leaning towards the latter. Most of this group work had occurred pre-high school education and was usually very polarized towards one individual's personal work ethic. If one or two individuals failed to do their part, the project itself would progress at a normal rate and the timeline for completion would be more compact than the preferred alternative. Highschool itself included very few group projects with the exception of the occasional collaborative presentation.
I have never had a class that focused so much on a team oriented teaching experience. When teams were chosen at random and

It’s a wonderful thing to come to class, ask a close peer an opinion and be able to discuss it to the point where a conclusion can be drawn from it. Having a team full of members who want to be there and participating was also a very great personal help. I did my best to come in everyday with everything read in detail, but often times information can easily be lost overnight. Having others with even more detailed notes, or just perhaps an alternate understanding, leads to a much more fulfilled classroom experience when it comes time for discussions that occur post-group …show more content…
Raphael is obviously very interested in both American and world politics. Sometimes he would not have such a working knowledge of the material meant for class, but could draw inspiration for discussion from outside sources. However, his ability to realize that his own personal views and opinions might not be shared by all members of his group is one of his shortcomings. Often times, Raphael would jump into a large group discussion and stand as a representative of Prestige Worldwide without consulting others or stopping to say that the opinions he was expressing were not that of the group but his own. Sometimes his own opinions on a matter, like dissecting opinions of Supreme Court Justices, would overpower those of the group during discussion. If I could ask for one improvement anywhere in the group experience, it would be for Raphael to be more considerate towards viewpoints outside his own, and to work on achieving a group attitude. Having to deal with such a problem almost daily can be a very unpleasant in a group setting. One could hope that this is felt by other members of the class, and from discussions outside of class, this seems to be the case within the group

The United States commenced without parties, but then later on, parties emerged and became powerful. The “first” party system was considered not strong enough because it was the first. The second party system surfaced around 1824, it’s distinguishing characteristic was that political participation resulted in a big phenomenon. The main institutions of the American party system is interest groups and the political machine. In high school, we were constantly being told that we could not work in groups because we would get too loud. In university group work was encouraged so that our professors wouldn't have to do as much marking. During my observations at my CSL there was a lot of group work. Comparing when the students were working on group work to their individual work, the results were polar opposites. The tasks for students was to write down what they knew about 5 sided figures.…

I know feel that everyone will not always agree with what I have to say or what I think and I will not always agree with what other people think or say. I just have to respect, listen and consider their opinion. The group and class discussion also helped improve my critical thinking skills and communication. I sometimes find myself talking over people whenever I disagree, but in this class I had to remember to let others speak as well. I managed to keep an open mind when it came to moral issues.…

American politics depend particularly on money to create action and accomplish what is needed. There are many actors in American politics, however money effects the way interest groups and members of Congress operate. Interest groups and members of Congress are similar due to the fact that they both use money to finance campaigns and accept financial contributions. Interest groups are a collection of individuals with a shared knowledge, status, and ideology that advocate for particular political issues that are beneficial to the group. These groups use money to influence politicians and to pressure lawmakers to support policy initiatives that benefit the ideological goal of a group.…

Interest groups play an increasingly important role in American politics and have become intertwined with the function of political parties. Richard Skinner, the author of More Than Money, outlines how the influence or “expertise” of interest groups have made them integral parts of the party matrix. The interest group’s ability to ignite and connect with voters because of their credible reputations has caused parties to align themselves with these groups to win elections. Interest groups are fused to the party system as they are beneficial in winning elections.…

With the key word being influence in the question I would have to say interest groups are nefarious. The act of interest groups attempting to influence politicians is a good and sound basis in a democracy, however it is working more in the manner of whoever has the money gets the influence they desire. It also comes down to ones perspective, a scientist making $150,000 a year working for Monsanto is going to have a different perspective than I, as a grower of food without chemicals. The ACLU works for all groups, both those they may agree with or not, in support of what the Constitution says. The big difference is that the ACLU is a group that uses their money, much less than the Monsanto group, to lobby by pursausion rather than through campaign…

The disproportionate representation of powerful interest groups poorly influence politicians. The power they hold over politicians can make candidates carder to interest groups just for campaign finance instead of seeking to address the needs of ordinary Americans. Interest groups make the democratic process selective to those who have the means. The Government can start to responds to interest groups voices not the people. Those who are not as wealthy or available lack influence on politicians, which leaves them out of a true representative democracy experience.…

Interest groups are the decisive factors in an election, and are prominent at every level of American politics swaying and influencing voters. They use tactics and send out messages that seem to be for the voters, when actually it’s the contrary. Interest groups seek to influence political processes in ways that benefit their members. In doing so, however, they may not act in the overall public interest. Still while acting for their own self improvement these interests groups continue to be wildly popular with the largest one in the United States being AARP, (American Association of Retired Persons), having over 37 million members .…

I am reflecting on a midterm review session I co-hosted with my fellow peer mentors just this evening. I, along with the other mentors were extremely excited for the session we had planned for the BIOL 315 (Quantitative Biology) students. Recalling Bruffee, the author of “The Art of Collaborative Learning: Making the Most of Knowledgeable Peers”, he had stated that “Students learn better through non-competitive collaboration group work than in classrooms that are highly individualized . . .” (pg. 44). Based on this, we decided to do three group activities that would gauge the understanding of the students of their course material.…

Introduction In this reflection, I will focus on some important topics such as, what I learned about individual and business taxation from this course, what was my experience with the group project and what were the challenges that I faced during both the group project and this course. I am also going to add some main overall points that I learned. Tax is generally an amount of money that is charged by a government on a product, income, or activity so that it can pay for public services. In addition, there are several very common types of taxes: • Income Tax (a percentage of individual or corporate earnings filed to the government) • Sales Tax (taxes charged on certain goods and services) • Property Tax (taxes charged on the value of land…

In such a small class I expected further class activity together outside of the classroom. This has proven to not be the case, this is perhaps because of the nature of the class or perhaps the nature of the group. This lack of group discussion outside of class is perhaps changing as just recently four of the seven of us worked together (or more accurately near each other in the completion of our essays). This will be interesting to note whether this will be an upward trend into the new block. I wonder if this will influence the earlier point of time management concerning larger assignments.…

Many teachers speculate what the best styles of teaching are. Each teacher’s style is unique as the individual that utilizes that style. Several key cornerstones of education have lasted through the centuries of modern education; one of the most prevalent is cooperative learning.
