Critical Book Review: Case Critical by Ben Carniol Ben Carniol’s book, Case Critical: Social Services and Justice in Canada, is an exploratory piece of literature that presents a detailed picture of Canada’s social welfare system, through the viewpoints of social workers and, more significantly, social service users. Carniol offers an examination of the challenges and barriers faced by structural social workers within social service organizations in Canada. The use of personal and external narratives throughout Carniol’s book allowed me to further develop my understanding of the failings and contradictions of our welfare state system. This, while simultaneously inspiring me to create change throughout my future career as a social worker and…

Working with seniors in the case of abuse is challenging and demanding, and social workers need to use an anti-oppressive approach in order to address the issue and meet seniors’ needs. Additionally, social workers need to have a deep knowledge about risk factors, symptoms of neglect and elder abuse, in order to address the consequences and prevent them from reoccurrence (Donovan & Regehr, 2010). Elder abuse is a result of oppression based on age, which means that structural anti-oppression intervention surrounding aging is required in order to “confront and change social institutions, policies, laws, and economic and political systems that operate in a way that benefit the dominant group at the expense of subordinate groups” (Mullaly, 2007,…

The media and advertisements constantly display and flaunt women with amazing figures-- usually, abnormally skinny or fit-- insinuating that this is what all women look like, or in order to be successful you must look like this. Body image is defined as the subjective picture or mental image of one’s own body; and this image can be influenced based on society expectations, cultural traditions, availability of basic needs, such as, food or water, and the representation the media is able to convey to most individuals. Although every person has their own body image, it is still somewhat taboo in most areas to discuss what image should and should not be considered healthy or ‘ideal’.…
