While some people like group projects, there are many disadvantages to them. Teachers assign group projects thinking that they will be easier with the help of friends to complete not realizing the problems they present. It is my belief that teachers should not be assign group projects because of the risk of kids misbehaving together, kids being excluded, and unequal amounts of work contributed by group members.
My first reason teachers shouldn’t assign group projects is that there is a risk of kids misbehaving together. Either with friends or other kids, students become distracted from the task at hand and fool around. This could lead to disruption in the group and even the class. Neither of these are acceptable because kids tend to make bad choices in school around friends and other when they can slack off, and either everyone or no one should be able to work with their group of choice. In addition, there is always the risk of unequal amounts of work being contributed to the project. It is absolutely ridiculous that kids receive the same grade on the project when the teacher doesn’t know who did what amount of work. Many times before, I have been placed in a group and have been the only or one of the few contributors to the work on the project. It is infuriating time and time again to be the only one working hard and everyone else receiving the same grade. It is unjust and inaccurate for kids to receive the grade for unequal amounts of work spent on group projects.
