In this essay I will give my reactions to a group meeting that I attended using the Group Work Theory. I will focus on the small sub group that was formed that I observed. For that I will review the strengths of the leader of the meeting, skills that were used in the group setting, and what stage I felt the group was in. I will also cover cultural and ethical issues that occurred in the meeting. Finally, I will review the meeting and the outcomes to see if there was anything that I felt that should have been done differently and my opinion of the process.

Each person was asked to come up and get a packet of information and a random picture of a plant or animal. Once everyone received their picture, they were told to find and sit at the table that matched their picture. This was done to even out the distribution of the teachers, who tend to stick to their own center co-workers. This process also assured that there was diversity and a mix of cultures at each table. Each table was then given a group leader from the staff of center directors, family advocates, or head teachers. The facilitator of the meeting then asked each table leader to conduct introductions. This consisted of each teacher introducing themselves, where they work at, and how long they have been with Kids Inc. Once the table introductions were done the first facilitator opened the meeting with a short clip of a cartoon about team building. She then introduced the topic for discussion and began to elaborate on the purpose of the meeting. The first being the wording choice that some cultures use with child. The leader gave the example of when a child has a dirty diaper, some say, “Oh, you stank. Let’s get you cleaned up.” Even though this is meant to be playful and not harm the child, she pointed out that this cultural slang needs to be avoided. Many at the table had used the slang and as she pointed out, it was not meant to offend of harm.
