Group Norms

Norms Of the Group Every society and group has a list of norms and unspoken rules. They have these rules to avoid chaos. Schools have a set of unspoken rules. At one of my previous schools, we had stairs. Everyone knew that the right side was to go up the stairs, and the left side was used to go down the stairs. Among my social circles, my friends don’t push boundaries. This is an unspoken rule in both society and among other groups. Tacit rules have always been around. Some of the most important rules are rules that are part of the social contract. In an elevator, no one looks directly at anyone. Everyone avoids eye contact. If we were to all stare at each other; standing in the elevator would be very uncomfortable. It’s not only negative

Society and people as a whole have a tendency to segregate each other. “The Lesson” written by Toni Cade Bambara, gives a perfect example of how people in society tend to segregate themselves from others. Some individuals would rather stick to living in their current situation whether it be due to the fact that it is how they were raised, or they just like it. Some cases it may be due to the people around them. Sometimes others’ do not want people to do well in life, or it can be because they are afraid to succeed in life.…

Breaking Social Norms In today’s world we are given a list of social norms we feel compelled to follow as a society. Social norms are the rules of behavior that are considered acceptable in a group or society (YourDictionary). Norms typically change over time due to several different factors and reasons throughout generations. Over the past two days I have spent my time breaking the norm of giving personal space by sitting extremely close to strangers and documenting the people’s reactions while doing so.…

Norms are unwritten rules that everyone tries to live by. Following "Social norms" is essential to the stability of a country. Without a general understanding of the rules and expectations of society, it could lead to chaos, whether discussing traffic issues, criminal issues or everyday life issues. One social norm that many people live by is giving people personal space. Everyone values their personal space, it is a necessity for most people.…

Conformity circulates the lives of many, in both societal and economical ways, and most of the time it occurs without realization. Kennan’s article reflects just this, our absent-minded way of submission. His use of relatable ideas and complex diction enforces his tone and opinion upon the reader. Oppression tends to relate in a situation when involving conformity however meager or drastic it may be. It is true that many countries’ government has lost its original intended power and now, “…exists in irregular forces- in underground groups, criminal gangs, or informal associations of vigilant nature-“, yet there are some countries that have conformed to this sort of power because of oppression, Mexico is a valid example of this.…

Our society has been molded by norms for many centuries and the average population follow them because it is the “right” thing to do. In Sociology in Modules, by Schaefer, it states folkways of our world are defined as “standards of behavior maintained by a society” (66 par.1). Some specific norms are called formal norms, informal norms, and folkways. Schaefer also says how our formal norms are “written down and specify strict punishments”, while informal norms are “understood but not…written” (68 par.1-2). Then there are the norms called folkways which control our daily behaviors.…

Violating Social Norms (or: The Most Uncomfortable Elevator Ride of My Life) Upon completing this assignment, I have come to the conclusion that trying to violate a social norm on purpose is actually difficult and takes calculation, whereas accidentally doing it is so much easier. I chose to model my violation of a social norm off of the famous elevator groupthink experiment from the 1960s that has to do with conformity and ‘peer pressure’. I use to do this when I was a kid with my friends at the mall. We would have a high success rate, partly because there were about six of us.…

I wasn’t sure how people would respond or if I would get in trouble or have someone notify security because my behavior would be so out of the norm. Not only was this experiment degrading and eye-opening, but I learned that there are many social norms that aren’t even formally stated, they are simply unwritten rules that society naturally abides…

If there were no norms, we would live in a world with no rules or guidelines and that would create chaos. If someone were to break a norm they would be judged for breaking it just because it is not something that is seen everyday or it’s simply not normal. Norms are what make society unique because it creates culture, communities, and order. Different cultures or groups of people have different…

Norm Violation: Social Observations and My Experiment Everyone in our society has rules and different guidelines they follow and cannot break. Many people like following the rules and their guidelines because they feel like if they don’t have any rules or guidelines to follow, without them they would be acting differently and breaking several rules. In my sociology class, we were all given the Norm Violation project, at first, I didn’t know what it was or what to do because I didn’t know what was a norm. A norm is like following rules something that you know everyone does and expect everyone to do it the same way; it’s like everyone eats cereal with a spoon, you shake hands with your right hand when you meet someone new, you stop when there is a red light and you go when it’s green. They are just things that you expect people to do or know.…

There is definitely a heavy sense of pressure on any human to be like the rest. Human kind seems to praise conformity and demonize the instinctual need to stick out. Kids are brought up in a system that wants them to be a certain way. Everyone has to take the same classes and get the same degrees, while other students who even think of other things can be admonished by their peers and parents. Ralph Waldo Emerson was justified and correct in writing, “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment”.…

The presentation about Chapter 18, Behavior in Public Places, talks about general behaviors and common manners around public places in the United States. The presenter divided the behaviors in public places in two parts, rules for behaviors and communication behaviors. I agreed with all the contents the presentation contained. Also, I think these behaviors are all based on the Americans’ values and assumptions. Equality and individualism, which are significant Americans’ values and assumptions, affect the American behaviors in public places.…

In my first observation I decided to go to the YMCA and look at different areas in the building. I went during 2-3pm on Saturday and 12-1pm on Sunday. On Saturday I visited the gym where I saw a plethora of kids playing basketball and a few adults playing by themselves with the occasional group of teens loitering by the courts. On Sunday, however, I visited the weightlifting room where I saw, essentially everyone lifting either with a partner or alone. Although, in the weightlifting room People’s age ranged from a teen to senior citizen.…
