Group Exercise Classes
Referring back to Appendix A, the Pat Jones YMCA stated: “We expect Tessa to fulfill the duties of our wellness coaches. We also expect that she will find projects and ways to serve while she’s with us. We expect that she will take our group exercise classes and provide input.” As part of this I participated in the following Group classes: Body Pump with Colleen, Zumba and Mixxed Fit with Angela, Silver Sneaker: Senior Circuit Classic with Melissa, Core and More with LeeAnne, Hustle and Flow with Lauri, and the Body Combat Demo. Communication of feedback on these experiences were communicated to other wellness coaches the next day after the experience and briefly recorded in my activity log. To provide further detail

This is the circuit routine creator that I had the experience of witnessing as well as using for a couple of members. In summary, we have some members who for various reasons may not have the physical capability to do certain exercises Activetrax would normally provide them. There is the option for staff members to go into Activetrax and restrict or remove certain exercises from being given to the member, but this runs the risk of demotivating the member and not giving them the best workout to challenge what they can do or progress the way they could in a therapy setting. Thus the circuit routine builder and appropriate use of research found online can assist the wellness coach, or even a personal trainer, to create a personalized circuit routine for the member that they will be able to see and print off through Activetrax. Throughout this program I have been able to witness the beginning with finding new ways to assist seniors to exercise beyond the silver sneaker classes. There were other notable opportunities to use this program in the internship as I created a circuit for a female member, named M in notes, who had a weak shoulder under management by Melissa. Then there was also the opportunity to create a more back focused workout circuit for a younger member who wanted to build strength in his back near the end of the internship. These experiences showed the variety of opportunities this part of the program has for YMCA members’ goals and I hope to see it be used more and possibly even

I would like to recognize Jed Smith as an exceptional individual as well as collegiate strength and conditioning coach. His knowledge, personality, and altruistic character led the University of Northern Iowa to new heights. I was a student-athlete at the University of Northern Iowa majoring in Exercise Science when Jed became the head strength and conditioning coach. Jed started a tradition and foundation at UNI on an academic level as well as athletic. Academically, he worked closely with the exercise science department to put more of an emphasis on strength and conditioning as a profession, which further led to both of my degrees in Exercise Science (i.e., M.A. and B.A.).…

Summary I interviewed John Cummings whom is the Associate Director of Washburn’s Student Recreation & Wellness Center. Cummings received his Undergrad in History at Northern Arizona University and his Master’s in Public Administration from Drake University. I purposely selected Washburn’s Recreation & Wellness Center because that is the gym I personally use and did not know much about the managerial details and the overall statistics about the people that exercise at the Rec. The Recreation center is unique because it provides a different social atmosphere to over 500 students daily all who have made the conscious decision to come to exercise. The rec is not for athletic team practices and physical education classes its open to all students…

The Scarborough YMCA After reviewing and analysing the case study, “The Scarborough YMCA: Getting Back on Track” (Mark & Seijts, 2010), it was abundantly clear, that from the beginning this facility was plagued with obstacles and with each change in general manager there was a computation of deficiencies which have resulted in the authentic leadership dilemma it was now being faced with. Over the years, as each new general manager took charge, the leadership vision shifted its focus from one area to another, never really resolving any of the performance issues related to membership, member satisfaction and financial perspective. Although each general manager tried to improve the organizational sustainability, they failed to implement solutions that would produce long-term results in areas such as: fitness program, repair the infrastructure, updated equipment, morale issues and overcoming yearly operating deficits.…

MPH Competencies In the beginning I visualized opportunities for the YMCA such as: introducing new communication and education avenues such as Pinterest, taking a public health systems approach with Missouri State University to encourage use of Activetrax and the importance of nutrition, find realistic opportunities for the YMCA to enrich the nutrition education part of Activetrax with basic statistical methods, apply research principals to class count data, and develop public health interventions to evaluate Activetrax. These opportunities are mentioned as part of the expected MPH competencies for the internship plan and so they as well as three Discipline-Specific Competencies and three Interdisciplinary Core Competencies will be in the following…

At the beginning of class we started off with an three shorts exercise that test how fast we could answers questions or reply to certain situations. As with the previous classes that were started with a exercise, this one was different. Some of the questions that were asked were how long you were married, and what school did you go to. Next, for the following exercise we were required to think of a letter and name a word that was associated with it. The letter that I had to associate a name with was z, so I said zebra.…

In the past few months, I have had the invaluable opportunity to observe one of the Athletic Trainers at The University of Miami and see firsthand what it is like to work for a Division 1 athletic program. Many people never see what goes on behind the scenes in order for their favorite athletes to perform at the highest level during sporting events. Being in the Athletic Training Facility gave me this exposure and helped me to understand just how essential the role of the athletic trainer is for a program. I was able to apply the information that we covered in class in order to get a better understanding of why the Athletic Trainer made certain decisions in regards to their athletes’ health. Every moment I spent in the Athletic Training Facility,…
