Co-Facilitator Ruth started session 10 like every session. She asked everyone to share how they were doing, how their week had been, or if there was anything specific they wanted to share or focus on this week. Ruth nodded to Amy who was sitting to her right and said, “would you please begin”. Amy shrugged her shoulders and said, “OK to be honest I 'm a little nervous about today 's group, the subject matter makes me uncomfortable” (1).
A. Ruth, one of the co-facilitators had asked everyone to check in about how their week had gone or what they wanted to discuss this week. Amy was feeling a bit afraid and a little vulnerable about being honest during the check in. She was concerned there would be a judgment from the other members.
B. The group member’s responses to Amy’s demand for work were all avoidance but one. Without saying a word the other members showed they too were not confident in talking about such a taboo topic.

If I was the worker I would have done things differently. I would’ve allowed for the continued check-ins, as to not interrupt the check in process, but once the check-ins were complete, I would talk to the group asking for those who did not talk about that week’s topic, maybe asking in open-ended questions or acknowledging the taboo nature of the subject and that talking about it can be difficult. Just as it would be difficult to have that first “sex” talk with your children when they become adults. Facilitators need to be aware when group members are avoiding doing the work, as in this situation due to the nature of the subject there was a lot of simple avoiding of the original demand of work made by the facilitators (Malekoff,
