Group Counseling and Group Work In the Group Counseling course, we were asked to come up with a group proposal project in pairs. My partner and I decided to propose a group for Sexual Assault and Rape Education/ Support Group. A big emphasis on the group we designed is to provide an environment for Sexual Assault survivors in which they did not have to feel pressured to report to any form of authority (campus police, or city police). Doing this assignment was hard for me because I never realized how much time is actually spent preparing for a group. All the different areas that needed to be covered made designing the group stressful. This helped me learn that if I am designing a group or planning for a group to make sure I allow myself …show more content…
Finding something that I would like to do research on was difficult being that research is not something that I am interested in pursuing. Research is something that is important in our field, but I have come to realize that it is not something I enjoy doing and I am thankful for those who are willing to do research. Learning how childhood abuse can affect individuals as adults is something that has been interesting to me. Being that I had to come up with something to research I decided to go with something that is interesting to me, I decided to do research on the likelihood that adults who experienced childhood abuse will engage in intrafamily conflict or adulthood …show more content…
The goal of this assignment was to find an area in which we believe that there is a lack of mental health counselors and would benefit from having mental health support. I decided to go with hospitals, Kadlec Medical Regional Center specifically. The reason I decided hospitals would benefit from mental health counselors is because as a previous volunteer at a hospital I saw the lack of emotional support family member and patients received from staff. Another thing that led me to advocate for mental health counselors at hospitals was having the experience of being the family member of a patient who is in the ICU and meeting with doctors to tell you the prognosis and then leaving you without any emotional

My practicum has gotten very busy and interesting these last few weeks I have started vigorously working in the group setting with the clients and even making some decisions on clients transitioning into different levels of care. Working with women really has help me to acquire patients, empathy, and understanding. Most of these women have gone through very traumatic experiences in their past and they bring those issues behaviors they developed to cop into Group . Therefore learning group structure and norms have been really helpful and very important. According to Tuckman’s theory he articulated four stages of group development, which he labeled forming, storming, norming, and performing(Delucia-Waack, 2004).…

Notably, on March 3, 1865, a month before the end of one of America’s most brutal wars, the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln distinctively resonated a sound promised for America’s heroes who have dedicated their lives to protecting the United States of America’s freedom. To cite a reference, on the United States’ Department of Veteran Affairs website titled, The United States Department of Veteran Affairs, addresses President Lincoln’s promise for America’s Veterans. With reassurance, the United States Department of Veteran Affairs (2016) acknowledges that President Lincoln’s promise for America’s heroes is, “To care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan” (n.p.). The group project felt important to me, because it gave me a chance to present a topic that was meaningful to me. The topic of my group’s project was anti-racism in protest songs, and showing how many artists took to the stage with their thoughts of equality, attempting to change the way that some people are perceived in this nation. Preparing this project didn’t go without stress or challenges though. My group partners, despite my persistent nagging, procrastinated until the last minute to get any work done, and even though there were five of us in my group, only two people did any significant work on the presentation. As the deadline for the presentation was growing closer, I knew that it was time to act.…

There was an alternating schedule for on-call designated examiners, and they each took a turn.…

To maintain a therapeutic environment, remember that group therapy is a treatment setting, and not a place just to socialize. Strong emotions often arise in a group therapy setting. Susan, you mentioned that both of your models included group therapy. I am a strong advocate of group therapy for substance abuse users. Group therapy can be the glue that keeps them held together as a unit. The same principle is applied with support groups such as AA, however a person is generally assigned a sponsor that they can call when they feel their sobriety is being threatened. Lewis (2014) explains the correlation between group therapy and recovery.…

Group therapy has taught me that everybody in class and myself have something in common. We all go through difficulties throughout out life and have feelings that we have not dealt with even as adults. It felt nice to have a group were we can express our feelings in a safe space and judgement free zone. I feel as though the group had a lot more sad moments than happy moments and it began to get draining because nobody wants to be sad all the time. In the book The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy it states that “a member who has poor attendance record is unlikely to benefit from the group” (Yalom, 2005).…

There are times when the patient makes the decision to try group rather than individual therapy rather because they would rather listen and learn from those around the same age as them rather than an adult therapist. This type of therapy is often found in partial-hospitalization programs, therapeutic day and boarding schools, day treatment facilities and hospitals. In an effort to promote positive experiences and eliminate negative relationships staff members in these treatment centers ensure that their facilities are vibrant and modernized with toys, games and activities readily available. It is also essential for each staff member to convey to the patients that they can be a resource for them regardless of whether or not they are directly…
