What stood out to me during the first group counseling session was Dennis reaction to Veronica’s resilience story of being a single parent and her relationship with her partner. Dennis’ reaction to Veronica’s story made me want to contribute if I were a participant in the group counseling session, as I have gone through a similar situation. After hearing both stories it was fascinating to see the benefits of the group counseling session as both participants were able to empathizes with one another over a similar event but on opposite sides of the table. As the group counseling session began to continue from this event I felt that it became a precursor for others in the group to begin sharing personal stories of resilience.

For example, I notice in the group session that Dennis and Carlos were sharing more than others in the group and I thought how someone not in our class could monopolize the time. With only 45 minutes, I saw that it was difficult elaborate and keep individuals on topic during the group counseling session while not discouraging participation from participants. Being a spectator, I was mesmerizes by the different stories that I was shock to hear the five minute mark that session had left.
The most challenging aspect of group counseling I notice was the facilitator’s contribution of their personal stories. The facilitators did a good job of sharing their stories, while connecting to the topic of resiliency. Their contributions were great examples for the participants to model their own stories of resiliency.
