Group Counseling Observation

I observed many verbal and non-verbal behaviors Monday night during Group Counseling. The night started with the usual. Each person used a word or multiple words to describe their emotions at that moment. Immediately following, the discussion concerning relationship problems continued on from last week. Ryan started the discussion by talking about her partner who may have a wife. From there, Kristen expressed her concern with her move to Australia. She plans to move there once she graduates. However, she has not told her dad about this and it really worries her. Kristen talking about her father prompted Darkemia to express concern about her parents. She said she never met her dad and was raised by her mom. In addition, Darkemia

Balancing Ethical Issues in Group Counseling While ethical guidelines are established within most counseling associations, these codes do not provide rigid procedures in the event that an ethical dilemma should occur. In their research on competing values within the area of ethics in counseling, Samuel Knapp and Leon Vandencreek (2007) observe that situations occur in which neither laws nor ethical guidelines provide a clear-cut solution to these dilemmas. For example, a recent stroke victim exhibits severe anxiety and agitation at an initial meeting, which causes providing the client with detailed information about treatment and gaining consent difficult due to lack of rationality.…

Prior to starting my program in educational counseling, I strongly believed that I wanted to work in a four year setting. However, when I took ‘Group Counseling’ and met Dr. Mosqueda, she slowly convinced me to seek out the community colleges. As the class progressed, she mentioned the opportunity of doing hours at El Camino College, in particular the First Year Experience (FYE) program, so I decided to take the offer. This preface is important because it gives a glimpse into my constant eagerness to learn more about what exactly counselors do at the community college. Internship Site…

Firstly, reflecting on the lab simulation of our educational, behavioural intervention group, which was preforming in the working stage; with young women who were prenatal or postnatal; the socio-economic status was that of a lower income position. Sharon and I clearly had defined roles as facilitators, which we collaborated well between each other. There was a shared accountability when aiding in the group including mutual support of each other to help better meet the needs of the group, emotionally, educationally, and cognitively. With feedback from classmates and members of the group that was relayed back that the presentation was creative and well put together, it had a flow to the group. As facilitators we brought in our own life experience, and used informal educational tools and sharing to make the group feel inclusive.…

In attempt to develop range in my observation of support groups, I once again found myself returning to an old stomping ground. Throughout my years in high school, I dedicated several hours a week to my local church in a growth group for high school girls. Although I currently experience mixed emotions with religion, I recalled how influential it was during my teenaged years to have such support, convincing me to return to observe a group to identify ways in why it was so helpful for me during difficult moments in my life. Luckily, my previous growth group leader was still leading groups and graciously accepted my request to be a guest that following week. Meeting once a week, the purpose of these groups was to discuss the Bible and life issues, but based on personal experience, these groups offered much more than a few life lectures.…

To maintain a therapeutic environment, remember that group therapy is a treatment setting, and not a place just to socialize. Strong emotions often arise in a group therapy setting. Members are asked to express themselves with their words rather than through physical actions (e.g. hug). All members react differently to physical touch, so expressing yourself with words is…

With regards to my client’s non-verbal communication, I noticed that Betty was leaning on Freddy, her caregiver, a great deal. Throughout the interview, Freddy had his arms around her to comfort her during times of distress. To me, this indicated that there is probably a very close relationship and that he is not only involved but also protective of her. On the other hand, Betty’s non-verbals were fluctuating a great deal, this was a telling sign that I should use more of a calm vocal tone when addressing her to prevent me from provoking any unsettling…

Susan, you mentioned that both of your models included group therapy. I am a strong advocate of group therapy for substance abuse users. Group therapy can be the glue that keeps them held together as a unit. The same principle is applied with support groups such as AA, however a person is generally assigned a sponsor that they can call when they feel their sobriety is being threatened. Lewis (2014) explains the correlation between group therapy and recovery.…

Collaboration has been a huge factor in my school counseling development. The ASCA mentions that school counselors must work together with stakeholders both inside and outside the school (ASCA National Model, 2012, p. 6). By having a unified group of people (teachers, students, parents, community, administration, etc.) school counselors can access and support student achievement more effectively. Having this teamwork can really allow all parties to work towards a common goal of equality, which can build academic successes for every student.…

Social Work with Groups course is giving me more insight to the other courses that I have taken previously and some of those that I am currently rolled in such as Social Work with Families and Community Development. After reading the textbook and the discussions in class, the theories of group counseling, viewing groups through multicultural lens, leadership qualities and functions, co-facilitator and group development stood out for me and broaden my perception into Social Work as a profession. The first thing that caught my attention this time is that, theories of counseling are also applicable to group counseling. I learned about the theories in my social work practice class last year. This show how important the theories are to me as an emerging social worker.…

In working with this client it is important to understand her resistance. Her underlying cause that are driving her maladaptive behaviors. The client is pushing her husband away by her need to watch his every move and wondering if he is constantly cheating on her. In the client’s case, resistance is serving a purpose of impeding the uncovering of the problem and “once a conflict is reactivated in psychotherapy, they interfere with the renunciation of unconscious wishes and fantasies associated with the conflict” (Manetta, Gentille, & Gillig, 2011). The client is scared to move forward in her relationship because he could cheat again and any kind of good that was done during the time he was cheating would be a lie.…
