The Final Stage
When a counseling group comes to an end, it is a sad day for the group and the group leader. It is essential for group leaders to show the ending of a group as a positive part of the counseling process. As a group leader, I would celebrate the ending of group counseling and congratulate group members for their dedication. It is essential group leaders communicate with group members effectively and ethically (Yalom & Leszcz, 2005). The ACA Code of Ethics, Standard A.12, discusses the abandonment and client neglect. Group leaders do not abandon groups or neglect members in group counseling (ACA, 2014). Endings are always difficult, which is why it is important to facilitate a strong ending to group counseling. Examining the strategies and skills learned in the group sessions is a good way to reflect on what members can take with them and use in their daily lives. It is the group leaders responsibility to show everything that has been learned in the group has meaning and can be used in the real world. Group members need to be given time to reflect on their feelings and communicate their final thoughts (Corey, Corey, & Corey, 2010). I believe the last group session can be harder then the first and it is extremely important group leaders bring the end in a positive light. It is important for group leaders to encourage members to express their feelings and emotions about the termination of the group. Group leaders should give some time to discuss the fears and concerns group members are having during the last session. Once the group leader recognizes the member’s feelings of separation, it is time to reflect on how successful the group was. This brings the group back around to a positive ending. Group members are then able to see how their lives have improved and cherish what they have learned and experienced (Corey et al., 2010). I believe it is essential to acknowledge group members feelings before moving further into the discussion of termination.
