Group Counseling Group Analysis

The demographic chosen for this counseling group is women, more specifically women who have survived incest. In leading this group, I would screen women ages twenty and older who have survived a traumatic experience with sexual abuse from a family member. Most ideally these potential members will already be involved with individual therapy, and ready to enter a group atmosphere. Due to the nature of the group it is important that members have the ego strength to explore the material discussed, and ready to handle such an intense group. Upon screening, women who are assessed as self-destructive or may be in recovery for AOD maybe be turned away to keep both the group safe and the individual safe as they may not be ready handle such an emotionally demanding group.

It will be encouraged that members and the leader build rapport with one another to start the cohesion process. This will not only give a direction to move forward it but it will also allow the groups to be as member focused as possible. Moving forward it will be important for members to understand their own dynamics and how this affects them in everyday life, allowing for awareness to take place on faulty beliefs and how to challenge them. Group relation is such an important factor as it gives each woman a chance to help others with their disclosure. Creating a safe environment will facilitate further exploration of common member issues. Cognitive behavioral techniques will be very effective in this group because to changes a person’s outlook you need to help them to change their thinking. Role playing will also aid in consolidating the process and helping member to apply their new thought patterns and behaviors outside of
