Group Communication Survey Paper

1. I conducted the survey with two individuals with different types of group events to gather some contrasting examples of effective group communication. The first example was with Mimi, my coworker and a member of a wedding party who explained to me the functions of her group, and how they communicated to plan and organize the wedding parties, as well as ceremony. Mimi explained that they used visual cues, such as body language to evaluate the other members of the group while organizing the upcoming events. The norms of the group were with the elders, since Mimi was involved in a cultural event involving a multi-generational group of women, the elders of the group were regulating the atmosphere during the brainstorming activities. There were conflicting norms as the elders were not pleased that the younger group members were involved in drinking alcoholic beverages and because of the intoxication these group members contributed less than those who remained sober. Mimi explained that although the group represented the intended wheel network, the all-channel seemed more organic and are in the secondary tension phase.

The four phases of group communication are the orientation phase, the conflict phase, emergence and reinforcement. The phase that Mark’s business group is in the emergence phase. This is due to the fact that the group has established norms and conflict resolution through direct email communication and personal face to face meetings to discuss differences of opinions as well as to create an alliance among the partners of the group. The phase that Mimi’s group is in the reinforcement phase, as the group members have already moved past the conflict and established a positive working order, they are achieving the goals set among the group and the event is about to take
