Group Centered Leadership Research Paper

Group centered leadership is defined as, individual leaders coming together as a collective power to change a common goal. My definition of a group centered leadership is having more than one public voice, offers equality amongst supporters, and uses individual incidents as evidence to a global problem. Having more than one public ambassador is important in spreading the word and bringing awareness to people. Black Lives Matter is an example of a movement with many famous supporters. Having celebrities support a movement is important because of their fan bases. Samuel Jackson, a well-known actor, challenged his followers and friends on Facebook with a “I can’t Breathe Challenge”. The challenge was for other celebrities to sing “We Aint Gonna Stop till People are Free” to pay homage to Eric Garner. Kendrick Lamar song “Alright” touches on themes of police brutality and become somewhat of an anthem. Kendrick’s song provides us with hope that we will be alright. Beyoncé even showed homage to the Black Panther Party, whose purpose was to protect African Americans from police brutality, on national television during her performance. Many civil right movements sought out for one specific person who could lead and bring a change. Many of these movements made an impact but often lost its momentum when their leader died or was unavailable. Ella Backer believed that this type of leadership made superhuman figures out of ordinary people while robbing the group of their own individual power to change the collective condition. Group centered leadership allows for everyone to use their own powers and efforts straight to the cause. This type of leadership treats everyone equally, meaning that there will always be more leaders to pick up where one may have left
