Prior to starting my program in educational counseling, I strongly believed that I wanted to work in a four year setting. However, when I took ‘Group Counseling’ and met Dr. Mosqueda, she slowly convinced me to seek out the community colleges. In the textbook, The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy by Irvin Yalom with Molyn Leszcz (2005), Yalom discusses the here-and-now experience which focuses on the interactions in the group that occur during the course of the therapy session. In the novel, the group members often stirred toward past events and relationships outside the group which prompted Julius to guide them back into the here-and-now. In attempt to develop range in my observation of support groups, I once again found myself returning to an old stomping ground. Throughout my years in high school, I dedicated several hours a week to my local church in a growth group for high school girls. Although I currently experience mixed emotions with religion, I recalled how influential it was during my teenaged years to have such support, convincing me to return to observe a group to identify ways in why it was so helpful for me during difficult moments in my life. Luckily, my previous growth group leader was still leading groups and graciously accepted my request to be a guest that following week. Assessment within social work is a statutory requirement under the Children Act (1998). Working together (2013) lists what high quality assessments involve, such as decisions being made are done so at the best interests of the child, assessments are child centred and informed by the views of the child. In the future, if I have a client I feel would be a good fit for the group, I would be happy to recommend or refer them. The group seemed responsible, accepting, and warm. A person who might be both isolating themselves socially and struggling with abuse or addiction would be in good hands at this meeting. At no point was a Friend forced to speak or put on the spot. Susan, you mentioned that both of your models included group therapy. I am a strong advocate of group therapy for substance abuse users. Group therapy can be the glue that keeps them held together as a unit. The same principle is applied with support groups such as AA, however a person is generally assigned a sponsor that they can call when they feel their sobriety is being threatened. The group whose popup exhibition I have chosen to do my analysis on is Group A+ created a sculpture of Mao in the form of a Podium made from wood which stood to the height of a person and had various propaganda pieces that formed its body with a centerpiece that states serve the people, but the most interesting part of this piece is that while it is centred around glorifying Mao with propaganda it’s face does the opposite in the way that they portray Mao, Ultimately Mao is given an unflattering expression. The clinical group I attended was located at Wekiva Springs Inpatient Center in Jacksonville, and was held on November 18, 2015 at 1330. In charge of the group was Dr. Birt, a female psychologist with a PsyD. She was also a licensed professional clinical counselor. The purpose of this particular group session was focused on triggers and how to deal with them. Dr. Birt wanted to find out what triggered these patients to use and abuse alcohol and/or drugs. How to Establish a Voluntary Group Volunteering is a one way to assist our community. Social Work with Groups course is giving me more insight to the other courses that I have taken previously and some of those that I am currently rolled in such as Social Work with Families and Community Development. After reading the textbook and the discussions in class, the theories of group counseling, viewing groups through multicultural lens, leadership qualities and functions, co-facilitator and group development stood out for me and broaden my perception into Social Work as a profession.
