Phil learns to become a master at communication through each day, and it is clear to see that through the use of time as a nonverbal element. To continue his life, Phil has to change profoundly for the good of himself and the others around him. On his first day at Punxsutawney, Phil is very pessimistic and rude. It is clear to see that Phil refuses to be aware of the people around him because he is too self-absorbed to pay attention. When he wakes up again on February 2nd, he is the only one that knows he is reliving the same day in a tireless loop. Upon this realization, Phil starts to live the days as if there were no consequences. He seduces women, steals, and even gets thrown in jail. All the while, Phil even attempts to become closer to his coworker Rita and fails with growing frustration as his blooming attraction towards her becomes more pronounced. His first initial days showed the beginnings of Phil becoming more aware of the people and things around him. The initial awkwardness of learning how to communicate also presented itself in the first repetitious days. In order to keep building his skill, he got past the awkwardness though the valuable life lesson that his several suicides had taught him. In his skillfulness, Phil’s talent had made him recognizable and had a positive effect on himself and those around him. On his last day, he had finally learned to master his communication skill so that he could effectively integrate it into his day in a fluent manner that provided him with the satisfaction of fairly and honestly winning the heart of Rita, for whom he had fallen in love with. Throughout the movie it was clear to see that time provided the perfect circumstance to allow Phil to learn how to properly communicate. The first steps in learning how to do something is awareness. This is usually quite awkward and discouraging but with time and effort, skillfulness can be achieved. If phil would have given up and stopped at the awkward part, he would never have continued to the next day. It is important to understand the effect that our behaviors have on people.
