Grocery School Job Analysis

In the fall of 2013, I was hired as a bagboy at Benders Foods. For me this was a chance to make some money, and hopefully begin saving for college. Over the past two years, I have gained more experience from this job, than what I had ever thought to be imaginable. In just the short amount of time I have been working there, I am now trained to work as a bagboy, to work in the produce room, to work the cash register, and to work in the office occasionally. Being extremely versatile in this job is important to me, primarily because I want to pursue business later in my life, and knowing and understanding all of the aspects of a grocery store could be a beneficial key to my success. As I first walk into the store, I head straight to the back …show more content…
If I were to come in on a Monday or Thursday morning, I would be waiting for the truck to show up. Upon its arrival, I would grab a pallet jack, and open up the door on the dock so I may enter into the semi trailer. Once inside, I find one of the first full grocery pallets, pull it out and set it off to the side and out of the way until the rest of the truck can be unloaded. Once unloaded the truck may be reloaded with our empty pallets from the last truck. I head back into the truck with an empty pallet jack and I grab one of the blue tubs, which contains our ice cream, and needs to be kept cold and put away as fast as possible. I take this tub and pull it all the way to the other end of the store next to our walk in freezer in the back of the store. A co-worker of mine, Al, runs the frozen department. He puts his gloves on and begins to unload the tub as quickly as possible to prevent any product loss. After the truck is unloaded, I take a two-wheeled cart and begin to sort the freight out by its designated isle. Little by little, I take a stack to its designated isle, and then continue to put it all on the shelf. I continue this process for several hours until all of the freight has been put up onto the …show more content…
This item would then need to be placed into the system and have a sign made for it. This is a process that I had learned this previous summer. With the new item in hand, I make my way up into the office and sit down in front of the computer. Turning the item over to find it’s PLU, I begin to type into the computer the ten-digit number that specifically defines this one individual item. Once the number is in the system, I must describe the item, consisting of the item name, what department it falls under, weight, and price. Now that the item is in the system, I can then proceed to make a tag for it. This process being much quicker, consists of entering the item’s PLU, picking the size of sign that I desire, and lastly hitting print and waiting for the printer to spit it out. Now, with the new item in the system and a sign in hand, I head to its designated isle, and begin to move other items to the side so that there is enough room on the shelf to squeeze this new item
