Grit: The Power Of Perseverance Summary

The main idea of the article is based on Dr. Angela Duckworth, a psychology professor at the University of Pennsylvania, of how parents should allow their children to quit when raising them with grit. However, by allowing them to quit, that doesn’t mean by allowing them to quit on a “hard day”. Since most parents find it hard to grasp the balance between pushing their children and letting them quit from time to time, the article talks about how parents should be demanding and supportive at the same time while instilling grit in their child. The article explained the ideas well by covering how kids behave differently in certain stages of life towards events that they might encounter. The article also covered on how parents should determine whether or not it is necessary for the kid to quit. In the article, it mentioned that most children would want to quit when being discouraged, but parents should encourage them at times like this because they have more experience. Not letting one’s child to quit on a hard day works the same as pushing the child when feeling discouraged. Since the obstacle will eventually be overcome, it is always necessary to insure that the children …show more content…
Dr. Duckworth had been named a MacArthur genius in 2013 for her development of the concept of grit. Since the whole article introduced the idea of one of the experts in her field, I do find it believable. Another example was about Usain Bolt and how his mother had raised him. Bolt is the world-record-holding sprinter. Due to his achievement, it also made the article even more believable. I feel like the article had a very decent amount of information. If anything, I would like to know how parents should communicate with their children before determining whether or not they should really let their children quit. Overall, I enjoyed reading this

In How Children Succeed, Paul Tough’s overall purpose was to explain why some children thrive and why some do not in being successful. He uses examples of real life encounters and other credible sources to support his claim. For example, he talks to underprivileged children, coaches of sports and inspirational speakers. Tough points out that over the past few decade people have put too much emphasis on intelligence and IQ as the one thing children need to succeed. He then argues that what that has done for children and families is that it takes away from a whole other set of skills to be learned: noncognitive skills such as character strength.…

In sdgva.org’s article “Grit: Perseverance and Passion for Long-Term Goals,” Angela Duckworth explores grit, which is a quality that allows one to achieve their goals through dedication, perseverance, and focus. Although grit is a trait that may take years to perfect, individuals who possess the quality stay true to their goals, despite hardships and failure. Studies have shown that gritty individuals stay focused on one goal at a time, whether it be starting a certain career, or finishing a certain number of years of education. On the other hand, individuals who do not possess the quality change their minds more frequently when it comes to career paths and education. Duckworth argues that grit is equally, if not more important than natural…

Lack of parental support can be an issue in the use of tobacco, because if most people in the family smoke this is going to influence a young person in following the same patterns of behaviour, especially if they admire and look up to their parents. Wilkinson et al (2008) suggests that having a parent who smokes or smoked is a strong consistent predictor of smoking initiation among their children. The study Wilkinson et al (2008) conducted suggests how parental smoking affects a child’s attitudes and behaviour and evidently identifies that children whose parents both smoke had a 2.2 times increased risk of…
